The other evening I logged on and found myself joining the CSA line. It was rather well organised with vocal officers & NCOs directing matters. We shredded the Yankee defenders with musketry, but that wasn't enough for us, oh, no, no, no! We fixed bayonets, formed a column on the road, and at the word of command (along with "Scotland the brave" on accompanying bagpipes down someone's microphone, and a few of us whooping), we charged the Yankee position! The following three images are from the charge. I call them: "Ha!...", "...Ah..." and "...Oh".

Split in what way? Clearly these guys were all about immature humor and doing whatever they could to try and be funny. I don't agree with what they're doing out there but all the stronger case for password-protected servers and being able to separate from players who mock the game and time-period like that and TK people in the name of 'racism'.

He's a large channel with 1M + subs so it's great to see him play it. But as you said his humour and style just do not match the game at all and those who watch his video and his video only might think that that's the community right there.

Too me he is basically a troll. And a sad of example of too many youtubers playing games. They don't really care about the games, just about the drama and the likes/subs. I feel sorry for the devs the most. The rest of us have plenty of other people in here, that want's a game that is about tactics, teamplay and the whole ACW thing. :)

South Mountain- Is going to be a bloodbath for the union most of it will be uphill battle. Yet the union had
28,000 and the CSA had just over 18,000. So it will be a big number game on the tickets.
Union casualties of 28,000 engaged were 2,325 (443 killed, 1,807 wounded, and 75 missing);
Confederates lost 2,685 (325 killed, 1560 wounded, and 800 missing) of 18,000

The bullets have a lifetime of 5 seconds when fired so you should still be able to hit from much further away :p Excellent effort though :D How many attempts at shooting did you have to make at that range before you got a hit?
AlexBloodworth
02-28-2019, 05:02 PM
Thanks! It took me two tries. The first time I recorded but it hit the outer black edge. Once I figured out how to use the landscape as a marker at around 500 yards it was simply aiming higher as I moved back 100 yards. For example, I was aiming at a lower branch now I aim above it. The hardest one was my first one at 476 yards in the corn field that’s when I started to use the landscape as a marker because I couldn’t see the target like the 635 shot.
When I said it was my last shot on that range it was because I can’t go back any further believe me I want to hit that 1000 yard shot hehe

I thought this might be interesting to you. In the latest update, each shot has 40% chance to penetrate a wooden surface. This however proved to be insufficient. Here I did a test with the 40% chance to penetrate wood.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQa5MvAWr7w&t=463
Until I moved one of the players down to the bottom corner of the building and shot him, I was starting to doubt if the penetration was even working hehe. I then tried increasing the chance to penetrate to 90%
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQa5MvAWr7w&t=1240
And here is a side view of the penetrations.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQa5MvAWr7w&t=1568
In the next update we'll try having the penetration chance at 70%. 70% may sound very high, but the furniture inside the house is also blocking the bullets as well as multiple layers of walls. So if you are inside the room farthest away from the shooters, you are very unlikely to get killed and even if you are in the room closest to the shooters, you still have some cover and the shooters will have a very hard time accurately aiming at you. We are hoping this makes it more exiting to be inside a house as there is more risk, as well as giving the shooters outside the house a chance of flushing the defenders out.

Here's volumetric clouds only (which is what we're currently using in the live build).

Hello!
I've just released the time for the Developer joining us on Twitch today. Huzzah! It will be a light-hearted Q&A affair, so come along and ask any questions you've got. Some things of course will be integral to the development plan so we can't really go to topics that are not already publicly out there. Anything else goes though! I shall try and ask questions on the some of the history of the game from the perspective of a new player.
To keep things concise and in one spot, visit my Twitter for the times in your state

Hi again folks :),
Here's the footage from the Q&A with George (above), streamed live and attracted quite a few of you. Shoutouts to Texas regiments who made a valiant (and well received) attempt to take over chat in the early moments. I'd have given a high five if I didn't have so much going on at once.
Remember this is an Q&A for newer players but there is some great info from George that will cater for established veterans too. We do discuss upcoming features too!
Go check it out and if you like it you know what to do. If you feel uneasy clicking the link then you can find me on twitch and look for the highlighted vids section. Or you can wait for the youtube.
See you on the field, soldiers!

The biggest problem i came across is that big melee fights, as expected, were more chaotic, so you had more chances of sticking your bayonet in a friendly. Other issues where more lag on the server, some people got stabbed beyond the reach of their enemy's bayonet. And some maps who are already small will be not doable at all for 200 players, like Miller's Cornfield for example.

Seems like a feature, not a bug. It's just more incentive to avoid melee at all costs.

There are a couple artillery batteries on both sides that were from Maryland, when artillery gets further along they'll be supported.
The same can be said for the Cavalry as well.
But you are somewhat correct only the Union 2nd MD is with the infantry .

The Confederate 1st Maryland disbanded in August of 1862 and the second had not been formed yet.
Of course, but in addition to the 2nd Maryland US, there was:
UNION -
the 3rd Maryland(Antietam),
5th Maryland (Antietam),
Purnell Legion (Harper's Ferry & Antietam),
3rd Potomac Home Brigade (Harper's Ferry),
1st Cav. (Antietam),
"Rigby's" Battery A (Antietam),
"Snow's" Battery B (Antietam).
CONFEDERACY -
1st & 2nd Cavalry (with Jackson at Antietam),
"Dement's" 1st Artillery (Bombardment of Harper's Ferry from Loundoun Heights),
"Baltimore Light) 2nd Artillery (Bombardment of Harper's Ferry from Loundoun Heights & Antietam) Some history for them at Antietam: Evening of 16th they were aligned along several hills on Lee's left flank to protect both his flank and the fords to the army's rear. On the morning of the 17th the artillery on Lee's left engaged Federal batteries for nearly two hours. Federal infantry threatened the position near mid-morning but was met by Jackson's infantry. The infantry battle soon shifted further south toward the Dunkard Church and again the artillery found itself with little suppport. Federal infantry massed infront of the artillery and soon advance. Brockenborough, temporarily in command of his battery and five others, 24 guns in all, orders his men "Do not pull a lanyard until you get the command." He waited until the Federal line was nearly on top of his guns, then all 24 opened with double canister. Three times the Federals charged, and three times they were repulsed. W.W. Goldsborough writes "The ground was literally covered - nay; piled - with the slain and amimed of the enemy."),
"The Chesapeake Battery" 4th Artillery (participated in the reduction of Harper's Ferry),
47th VA Inf., Co. H "Maryland Zouaves" or "Zarvona's Zouaves" (Antietam as part of the Light Brigade's counter-attack that saved Lee's Army on the 17th),
AND
"John Pelham's Battery" 1st Virginia Horse Artillery (At Antietam with J.E.B. Stuart)

Here is the first sneakpeak of how the artillery implementation is coming along.
All of the below is subject to change as we are still in the early phases of development.
Work is progressing nicely with Mike, one of our programmers, getting the needed backend systems done quicker than we first expected. These backend systems will also be the base upon cavalry eventually will be built.
Pat, our character artist is currently working on making the artillery branch required uniforms and assets available (not arty crews featured in the screenshots).
https://i.imgur.com/raqps1R.jpg
Flemming, our animator, is hard at work on the new animations required (some of which are shown in the screens presented here) for the initial artillery implementation.
As you can see from the screenshots, the plan for the initial implementation is to have the pieces able to be pushed forwards/backwards at the wheels, the barrel elevated/depressed by rotating the elevation screw and the cannon aimed horizontally by picking up the trailspike and moving it left or right.
https://i.imgur.com/YHumSLT.jpg
We also plan on having the gunner be able to give hand gestures to show when to stop pushing/pulling the wheels or what direction to move the trailspike to in order to line up that perfect shot.

It's not set in stone yet (much isn't in regards to arty) but the idea currently is to have all different arty branch classes be able to do the same things - they'll just need to have the correct tools in order to do so. This makes the most sense if/when artillery crews start to take casualties.

I like this idea because it encourages communication/deeper teamwork.
It's also very historically accurate. I've read a few books that state when someone from an arty crew became a casualty, the guys rallied and picked up the slack. I don't remember exactly which book, but an example of such I believe was at 1st Bull Run when a union soldier's crew were all casualties, and he manned the cannon himself for 2 volleys before retreating because the position was about to be overrun.

In same cases yes, in some cases no.
The current gun locations are all real locations of the batteries during the fighting. They don't move about currently as much as they did during the battle however. Expect to see different batteries at different locations based on the very part of the battle the active skirmish area is portraying with the initial implementation of the player operated arty in the game.

For use when a teams morale status lowers. Even though these characters have union uniforms, this is the confederates shouting.
The local player also plays a shout sound so that is why when I move away from the characters you will hear distance shouts as well as 1 up close shout and when I remove alll but 1 of the characters, there are 2 shouts.

It's not intended as a morale recovery. :)
The current plan is to have a team shout when the enemy team's morale is lowered by a step (from battle ready to engaged for instance).

No, it does not make sense to make it so (at least not via a shout mechanic as we don't want it to be exploited in a corner of the map just to stack up on morale again). :)
The above sound ques for morale states is something that was suggested a few months ago by the community.

I thought it might have been like a last ditch rally cry with one use, and the morale recovered is based off how many do it together. Just thinking out loud.

Sounds good! I suggest giving it a longer fade-in and fade-out time, so that it starts as a few voices, reaches a crescendo after about seven seconds, stays there for another three seconds, and dies out five seconds after. It should seem less abrupt, and a better simulation of how many people yelling sounds.
Best,

Interesting. I'm assuming the Union variant of this will be a series of "hurrahs" in contrast to the raucous rebel yells.
Correct. :)

Have you considered that if it triggers while a team is setting up for a sneaky ambush that it could blow their cover?
Wouldn't it make more sense for it to trigger for the team that pushed the other team to a lower morale status? I couldn't imagine that your team would be very excited if an event just occurred that brought the morale status down.
Just for example, wouldn't the Rebels start shouting if they repulsed a Union attack and forced them to a lower morale status? Wouldn't the Union start shouting if they repulsed a Rebel attack and forced them to a lower morale status? This is what we see across media and accounts from the battles.
From the Union repulse in Glory: https://youtu.be/lJiMlgvygvc?t=51
to the Confederate repulse in Gettysburg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGX_0gAfs9E
Will there be a companion audible for the other team as well? Like an "Aw shucks fellas the days goin against us!"
Edit: Just to clarify I think this idea is really cool and could really add to the dynamic of the game, I just need a clarification about the trigger conditions.

No the simulation is only used for prebaking the then static folds in the cloth. Having all the tents simulated in the engine would be way way too expensive in terms of performance.

Why are you wasting resources on cut scene's for a game mode that's just a place holder until the new game mode comes out? It seems in my personal opinion like a waste of resources when you can be spending time and money on the final goal; The main game mode, artillary, and cavalry.

It would certainly make training manuals easier to understand!
As for the formations themselves, they seem a little... loose. The men aren't standing close enough together- any Sergeant worth their salt would give those men hell to pay!
I also noticed that the column of fours doesn't snake around, like it should.
But this is just me picking nits right now.

Skirmishes is in no way a “place holder” mode. It is intended to be the short, quick way of doing battle.
The game is as much about trying to teach you what went on back then via gameplay and other means as it is about being “a game”. The above took one of our guys (Fancy) a few days to create in order to help us doing so.
We are spending money on bringing in the artillery and cavalry and have been doing so for the past several months. As I stated elsewhere on Steam yesteday, we have enough funds to keep going for years which is what we intend so no need not to worry about us not being around for the next very long while indeed. :)

Hopefully the flag wear level will be programmed so that the flag can only go down a wear level every 30 seconds or so. It would be strange to see it dropped, get dirty, then immediately get dropped again and come up even dirtier and more ragged after such a short time.

Ragged soldiers need ragged flags...Neat idea, can't wait to see this little detail implemented.
