I agree, people on the Union tend to waste half the round forming up and marching, instead of using their advantages that could win them the round. ...
I respectfully disagree.
The time taken to form up and marching and etc., is exactly what this production was all about to start with. It is the very fiber of what the developers wanted to happen when they envisioned this 4 years ago.
True today we may sit here and read accounts of battles and read that it was a 12 hour long meat grinder, when in reality, it took the forces of the day 3 or 4 of those hours to just get in a position where they could come in contact with the enemy.
Example:
June 26th 1862. The Army of Northern Virginia is on the right bank of the Chickahominy River waiting for Jackson to get into position before attacking a well entrenched Porter on the left bank of Beaver Dam Creek just to the south and east of a small town called Mechanicsville. A. P. Hill was positioned where his division would be the first to have contact with Jackson's forces as they moved into position. This contact was to prompt Hill to cross the Chickahominy at Meadow Bridge and then turn right and flush the Union forces down the left bank of the Chickahominy clearing the way for Longstreet and D.H. Hill to bring their forces over to the left bank of the river, (which is actually a creek at this point.)
Jackson stated several days earlier that his troops would be in position by 7 A.M. on the 26th, but due to unaccounted delays, (some Union resistance, weather, etc.,) Jackson wasn't able to get his force into position on the day and time he stated. A. P. Hill expecting contact with Jackson all that morning finally grew frustrated and impetuous by 3:00 P.M. that afternoon. Causing him to force the crossing and proceed toward the entrench Union forces under Porter.
Once contact was made with the enemy, somewhere around 4:00 P.M. Hill's troops were not in position to make the attack until after 6:00 P.M. That's 3 whole hours of maneuver marching and aligning troops into position before making the attack. And while the battle lasted well into the night, ending around 9:00 P.M. when it became too dark to maneuver. It was only a 3 hour fight that started 6 hours earlier with the crossing of the river.
I applaud the boys in blue in this game if they are in fact taking the time to get their forces in array, making the march at a walk, and realigning themselves before making the attack. This is what the developers envisioned happening as they started on this venture. Their dreams are taking fruition.
It should not be held against them for doing exactly what they are doing.
6784 HUZZAH to the Union for doing the way they are, and may they continue to do so.

George's Corner Last nighte . . . Poor disiplin, poor leadership, (The good officers where missing) disaster . . .
I think this short video, kinda states the missery of the first round.
I have noticed a diffrence between playing union and rebbel.
The union tends to be much occupied by drills and manuvers, spend way to much time in diccusions and forming up in the spawn area.
There is also spend, way to much time doing perfect lines at the enemie contact.
The Rebbels are moving quick and spend less time on nice lines and marching orders, they move fast to flagpoint, and form up there.
The play style is much more relaxed until enemie contact, then they fight like a unit, and have some pretty exelent officers.
I hope the Union never stops doing what they're doing now, it'll be an easy victory every time.

They are good because they work together and get the job done, not because they have nice formations or perfect tactics. You have your opinion and I respect that but I have yet to see any company in WoR as good as the 1st TX. The only other companies I've seen perform well are the 42nd Penn. and the 52nd NY.

Thanks for your nice words it's a honor. Also a big thanks to Capt McGee and his boys of the 42nd who was a great alliance in the last skirmish.
I congratulate and salute the 1st Texas and the 18th NC who fought brave and very well. It was a great battle around hookers push.
We managed to push them back and get into the capture zone with around 10 guys just to see the rebels charging down the hill. My last mind before I got shot was: 10 against thousands, I thought it has to be the other way round xD
But it was epic and a really nice event!

Last round on the event was played on Sunken lane, to hounor the 69th Irish that fought there, we changed into the historical uniforms.
But the intire battel is fought as 42 Pa at Hagerstown Turnpike.

Nice! There are some nice views from Bolivar Heights as well. What I never realized until this past weekend, was that all these years I've missed the fact that I had never been to an area down the west slope of Bolivar Heights. Never even realized there were cannons down in the field also pointing west (on Route 27 - or Bakerton Rd). On the below picture, you can see the obvious dirt path around Bolivar Heights, but what I'm referring to is the field on the west side of the trees at Bolivar Heights. Did you guys venture down to that side of the battlefield? From this picture there doesn't seem to be cannons on the battlefield, but my wife and I just drove past there this past weekend as we traced the A.P. Hill march in reverse from Sharpsburg to Harper's Ferry.

Pontoon bridges have been used since time immemorial, and it is said that the original London Bridge was a pontoon bridge built by the Romans. Continuing this tradition, the Union erected a pontoon bridge of their own at the base of the Harper's Ferry Peninsula, using an opening in the Armory grounds' river wall to connect both sides. The fiery Colonel Benjamin "Grimes" Davis convinced the aging General Miles to allow 1,300 cavalry of the besieged Union forces to try and escape using the pontoon bridge through Confederate lines during the night of September 14th. He was successful, taking out or avoiding the Rebel pickets, the lines of which had been thinned due to the exposure of the flank at Crampton's Gap. Davis also managed to use his native Mississippian accent to convince the head of a ninety-one long Confederate ordinance wagon train to take his forces as escorts. It wasn't until morning that the wagon drivers were surprised that their escorts had pistols trained on each one of them!
Below is a screenshot of a "what if?" scenario (direct CSA attack on the town itself).

I have to say that the very high visibility with low settings is a bit meh... haven't tested it myself but it seems that spotting troops is so much easier. Not a fan of lowering the graphics for an advantage...
If that was directed at me, it's what my Comp defaulted to (low settings) didn't realise when I was playing.

I'm with you on that one Gamble, unfortunately when the dev's have to address playability on lower-end computers, it seems to be an added by-product. I pointed this out very early in the technical alpha when we only had the Union drill camp. I happened to be standing near a house and was changing my graphics modes to see the difference, and I noticed that the change in foliage allowed for varying levels of visibility. Unfortunately, I'm not sure there is a lot they can do about that. My example was that I would not have seen a unit marching toward me in the highest graphics mode, but I would have seen them in a lesser graphic mode. Exactly what your example points out.
Here is the old post if you'd like to see the 4 screenshots that I included at that time. In the post I did misuse the term "resolution" versus "graphics mode", so when you read resolution, what I meant was the various graphics modes.

If you want to make the game look terrible for a slight advantage, fine by me.
I've changed my tune a bit on this:
People outright changing their settings (like everything low and using configs to get extra visibility etc) I have a problem with that, people would do this in Source Engine Games and it's basically hacking in my view (making objects transparent through configs and forcing lower direct X versions).
But I have to admit to doing a bit of setting changing myself in Rising storm 2 (i.e turning off Anti-Aliasing actually makes the Game playable because you can actually see enemies) otherwise it's like having vaseline smeared over your screen.

Are you sure about that ? Because our boys are better trained than to do dumb crap like that and if they do it's a solemn accident. And I'm pretty sure most of the teamkills were all from the damn trolls that messed up the event. But this is not a place to be discussing this stuff on this is only for screenshots and videos.

It does indeed date back to 2012. It might look crap (it does!) but at least it was all made by us - no easy shortcuts in regards to premade assets, etc. I think that's maybe the best advice I can give to someone starting out as green as we were - don't take the shortcuts. Take pride in creating your own stuff instead (you can be damn sure we were proud of the visuals back then). :)

As you guys should be amazing job. I just wonder how many things you guys have on the shelf waiting for the right time to be released into the Alpha testing world. If you see those old screenshots you guys had already put a lot of work into maps and such on a older game engine i am guessing.

Here's a preview of the next skirmish area at Antietam to be released.
731673177318
The above images are of the area in close proximity to Pry Ford - a crossable point over Antietam creek used by the Union in the northern part of the battlefield.
We wanted a "plain" skirmish area meaning very little in terms of defensive points or places to hide behind (big sloapy grass field is at the center of this skirmish area) and we're excited to see how it'll play out when released.
Close by is the upper bridge, Little Antietam creek, the S. Pry gist mill & farm... Naturally we are also yet to see P. Pry house/farm - the Union HQ during the battle. More about all that at a later date I suspect. :)

Thanks for the instructional video :)
That map is particulary hard cause the CSA doesn't have a excellent position to defend the cap (the rocks give some cover).
Another problem most get the 1842 rifle which is kind of not the best rifle at range to shoot escpecially when the UNION is behind a fence
That explains the heavy loses for a part and also the 38NC & the 51th was well organised and it was a nice event ! (charge looked really good)

First chance I've had in a non-populated Dunker Church skirmish map. As I made my way over to the burning Mumma Farm and in honor of the Halloween season, I strolled over to the Mumma Family Cemetery. Just wanted to recognize and appreciate Campfire Games attention to detail. As with all the visuals of your efforts, awesome! Super attention paid to the tombstones in the grave yard. Love it!

Thank you for taking me down memory lane. These are some assets I made a loooong time ago. Actually the names on each of the tombstones are the exact names as those who would have been there up until 1862.

Hey there Dmurray,
Indeed, as Fancy mentioned, we made sure that we only included the gravesites that would have been there by 1862, so it is a tad sparse in comparison to today's obviously. But we appreciate that that detail could be seen. It was one of the things we made sure to check when we were there ourselves a few years ago.

I suggest moving the capture point away from the fence line it is currently at, maybe in the orchard or open in the field to make it more competitive. Yeah both sides would take cover behind their fence/stone wall but only way to take the point if they run out in the open.
TrustyJam
12-18-2017, 06:42 PM
Thank you both for the feedback. :)
I will monitor how it all plays out the next while (as I do for all newly released skirmish areas).
The reasoning for the placement of the capture area is to open up for possible gameplay both via the cornfield and the orchard as well as flanking via the open grassfields from the hagerstown pike (the 7th tried both during their attack of the farm).
While the stonewall is an excellent defensive area I don't think it should be within the capture area. It is such an obvious place to defend I fear it will be the norm. The advantage with a more "out of place" capture zone is it opens up for different tactics.

I get what you mean, however, think about this (you even witnessed this I believe during an event on Piper Farm)
Union troops are put up on the fence. All the Confederates have are the orchard, which is limited to two people per tree safely, with three always endangering one person. The troops in the orchard are incredibly exposed on both sides even if you put troops on the left of the orchard in the open field because the Union troops who are already on the fence can pick the defenders off if they are in position to cover the left flank of the orchard troops, so the field troops pull back to the stone wall. All you have to do is advance troops up the hill, take the fence, quickly take out the orchard troops and replace them with Union troops (by now you are already capturing the point). Now move up the fence, battle with the stone wall troops, keep them preoccupied or even kill them all, and now the point is locked down. If the CSA were able to hold from the stone wall, they would be able to set up defenses there correctly and regardless of what happens up front, would always have troops in the point to prevent capture and allow for a counter attack that is not as hasty. I am not saying extend it into the whole walled in area, but at least include the stone wall plus a foot, and that would suffice.

If the CSA were able to hold from the stone wall, they would be able to properly set up defenses there and regardless of what happens up front, would always have control and troops in the point. I've played the map three times with a decent amount of players. One time as the Union and twice as the confeds.
When I was playing as the confeds we took a good amount of time before figuring out how to use the ground to our advantage. If you match out in the actual capture zone you will be facing Union fire from the cover of the cornfield. Pull a bit back, however, and you'll find the terrain is very much to your advantage as the slop will cover you from the cornfield in the distance but still allow you to fire on enemies between you and the cornfield.
The stonewall is an excellent position to have some guys at should a heavy attack reach the capture point as they will be able to fire at the enemies from a fortified position.

The amount of times you have played on a map does mean much.
You are only further proving my argument. The point is that if a substantial attack reaches the point, they have thoroughly overwhelmed the troops up front and secured the area leading up to the stone wall, which is much more helpful to the attackers than the defenders. Also, if it is a heavy attack the stone wall troops will have some difficulty trying to push the Union, I know it can be hard because I have been part of it. And because the Union can wipe through the frontal defenses so quickly with their massive attack, the reinforcement wave will take long enough to where the stone wall troops risk being overrun themselves and the Confederates are at a significant disadvantage.
I do not want to fill up this thread with tactical debate though. Aside from the stone wall becoming a go-to position because of how helpful it would be, what other reasons are there for not including it?

As stated in this or another thread, I forget, the defensive team is always at an advantage in terms of reinforcements as it spawns quite a bit closer to the capture point than the attacker.
Main reason is I want both flanks being useable (they were during the attack in real life) (there are only so many ways you can charge a stonewall with a barn to one of its flanks and yet another stonewall to its other flank) and I want a more dynamic area than just standing behind a stonewall for 40 minutes.

Reinforcements spawning closer does not always help as much mid-battle, especially with maps like Burnside bridge, Hagerstown, Hooker's Push (on the rare occasion the Union actually moves to the spot at all), Dunker's church you can just nail reinforcements right as they enter the point, Piper Farm I think is relatively similar to dunker church where if you move properly you can shut off reinforcements or slow them down if you avdance to the area around the stone wall.
...I want a more dynamic area than just standing behind a stonewall for 40 minutes.
Well, think about this, Burnside bridge is an excellent comaprison to Piper Farm. The fence right next to the point is an excellent fall back point because it is a very defendable area with cover and is within the capture range of the point. But, on Burnside bridge for the first half of the match, a lot of combat will happen up front and where both forces intitally come into contact with each other. And when the Confederates are overrun, similar to when they are overrun on Piper Farm, they retreat back to the very defendable area that may possibly have some reinforcements already there if the Confederates have the men to spare. Combat will focus will shift to this area until one side pushes the other out totally and wins, or the battle continues. Despite that very defendable fence being within the range of the capture point on Burnside Bridge, people don't just sit there for 40 minutes and be bored, no, they go up to the risky area near the bridge, similar to the field at Piper farm but not as open as the field, and fight the Union. So including the stone wall will not create stale combat that is at one spot for the duration of the match. Just like the fence on Burnside Bridge, the stone wall would allow for a solid area to set up premptive defenses for when the main frontal force is gone or just an excellent fallback point in general close to the main combat area, that is within control of the point.

I don't quite follow you. The fence on burnside is easily flankable as it does not have a massive barn covering its entire left flank like the stonewall at Piper farm does. It is also just a tiny corner of it that is within the capture area and that part doesn't have a clear view of most of rest of the capture area. In any case, you are right. If you wish to provide additional feedback please create a dedicated thread for it and we'll take it from there. :)

Played the 'event' and the 42nd was well organised and disciplined (these days the CSA has some pretty strong opposition).
We even 'actually' played 'Hookers Push', well we did have help from the 9th Roman Legion (guess time settings where off) who made a point of saying 'Et tu, Brute!' after every teamkill.
The Union moved up and captured the point, Rome fell into the West and the East (some of the 1st Texas and the II-core & 3rd Arkansas) ... guess history caught up :)

It was a great fight indeed! The second, when the 42nd opened fire on the legionaries :p

To be very fair to the rebels those two maps are very difficult to defend on particularly without the ability to crouch.

Rainbow Flyer's video made me regain some interest in cinematography and utilizing the newly released cinematic camera; I put together a bit of a technical display of the game for visuals.
The new cinematic camera was beneficial, and it was super cool to go around the map, see how the skirmish areas all tie together and even explore areas I had never seen (as featured in the video). It is a tad bit glitchy though, but that it is not exactly surprising. I hope more members of the community do this so people interested can get many views of the game outside of just regular first-person views.

On 21:54 the is the comment 'about the preaching to stay in formation' ... even if we die in formation on the map we have less 'morale/tickets'.
Notice both sides where breaking, but if you look at the end results (104 losses Union - 48 losses CSA) it's clear that CSA losses are weighing more.
Another main problem if you have like 5 guys shooting from te corn, 2 get shot (skirmish) and then more ... you're out of formation. (and most will be to late to react, which is normal really)
On this map having a few people 'doing there thing' will cost the CSA the victory even if 'defence' would be considered an advantage.

Trusty, Thanks for rolling with the 6th Louisiana Tigers & II Corps! That was an amazing map during the Sunday NA Event! Great tactics & teamwork on both CSA & USA. The Sunday events get better every week. This was one hell of a good start to 2018, 90+ on the server, in fact it crashed during sunken lane but, everyone hopped back on and the game was able to hold that many at one time. Each map was a slugfest back and fourth! Amazing event! If u have time Trusty i also hold a Monday Night Event at 8pm EST. Usually at least 60 + guys on, its primarly is a II Corps vs 51st NY event.....its always an utter slugfest. See you tomorrow night!
