At the moment we have no plans of making the players able to build fortifications. We are currently looking into whether destructible objects will be viable or not.

If you can run Far Cry 3, my guess is that you should be able to run WoR as well. We are still in the process of optimizing and are aiming to make the game playable at the widest spectrum of computers as possible.

Just found out about this game, looks extremely promising. Just some nitpicking/suggestions, Confederates dug rifle pits on the heights on the confederate side of Rohrbach/Burnside bridge and fired from there. They might have used headlogs too, they did not stand should to shoulder as is implied in the concept art, but were taking cover behind basically anything they could find. And is it possible to make the sunken road more "sunken", i.e lower the ground to make it look more accurate?

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the suggestions. We won't be adding any additional defensive structures to the heights of Burnside bridge at this stage. It's a question of game balance while still keeping it authentic and fun - a tough mix! We're open to change it up should the position prove too weak.

In terms of bloody lane, I do agree it needs a makeover. It was originally crafted after this image: http://warofrights.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=826&stc=1 and does hold up to it rather well I'd say. Maybe that's just a less sunken part of the road though.

Another question that might be stupid, will the fields and surroundings be completely empty, or will we see debris, destroyed limbers and corpses/carcasses spread around? It might sound macabre but I'd want to step over dead and wounded in the sunken road/bloody lane, which I hope will look something like this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/71/The_Aftermath_at_Bloody_Lane_by_Captain_James_Hope .jpg

So there is South Mountain on the map... so does that mean that possibly the 1st New Jersey Brigade will be in the game. (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, VI Corps, 1st Division, 1st Brigade). From what I've read they were a big factor in the winning of the battle of Crampton's Gap at South Mountain. I would love to exercise my "Jersey Pride" in this game :p

According to http://antietam.aotw.org/exhibit.php?exhibit_id=426 this is what happened:

First New Jersey Brigade
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry
Premier among Union combat organizations at Crampton's Gap stands the First New Jersey Brigade commanded by Col. Alfred T.A. Torbert. The Jersey Brigade held left center of the Union line. The assault on Col. Thomas Munford's primary Confederate position was intended as a simultaneous attack all along the line of battle. Instead Torbert's brigade charged forward first, quickly dispersing Virginia infantry holding a thin line of defense in Mountain Church Road. Here the Jerseymen struck an empty void on the mountainside and kept going uphill until they reached the gap road, 1st and 3rd regiments in front, 2nd and 4th regiments close behind.

Reaching the road, Col. Henry Brown of the 3rd New Jersey sighted the flank of Gen. Howell Cobb's newly arrived support regiments just getting into place below him in the woods to his lower right. Brown wheeled his line on the road, coming down directly behind the Cobb Legion Infantry. Meanwhile the balance of Torbert's regiments inclined to their right, enveloping the Legion front and flank. Surrounded on three sides, the Legion line was nearly doubled back upon itself as it fought for survival. Within twenty minutes the Legion suffered 72 percent casualties, most accounted for as prisoners of war. Two stands of colors were captured.

Somewhat disarrayed, the 1st and 3rd sorted out their conquest while elements of the 2nd and 4th continued up the gap road where they assisted in reduction of Cobb's last stand in the gap. Soldiers of the 4th New Jersey were largely responsible for flanking the final Confederate position at twilight. Crampton's Gap had been won largely through the efforts of Torbert's unstoppable juggernaut [That is the 1st New Jersey Brigade].

This "Surrender" mechanic worked well in "Resistance & Liberation"...after laying down your arms ( or go prone ?!) you were brought to a certain area of the map which could be captured and the POWs liberated....was pretty nice though. Reinforcements for the Sunken road

While the Confederates got heavily attacked at the Sunken Road, Brigadier General Wright's brigade got the order to send fresh reinforcements.
The 44th Alabama and the 3rd Georgia formed at Gen. Longstreet's headquarter at Piper Farm and dressed their battle lines. In addition, skirmishers were sent out infront of the main line to fight the enemy pickets.

It was during this advance, when soldiers of Wright's brigade saw General Longstreet himself, helping to shoot a 12lb Napoleon near the Apple Orchard.

1097

The retreat of the Louisiana Brigade

When the Union infantry rushed towards Miller's Cornfield, they drove the Louisiana Brigade back to the West Woods. Along that brigade was the famous 1st Louisiana Infantry, which had a company of Hay's Wheat Tigers attached.
When they finally reached the Hagerstown Pike, the soldiers faced each other across the chest-high rail fences that lined along the road and traded volleys at point blank range. Two regiments of Union sharpshooters joined in the fight and poured a heavy fire into the left flank, while a battery of cannons unlimbered 75 yards from the road and raked the Tigers’ line.

In less than half an hour, both Louisiana brigades had been shattered.
Two days after this slaughter took place, Alexander Gardner began taking his battlefield photographs and made the most famous photo of the war, displaying the casualties of this fight.

Burnside Bridge

While the union attacks concentrated on the northern flank and center of the battlefield, the southern flank was silent for a long while.
At about 10:00 AM, General Burnside tried to cross the Antietam at the Rohrbach's Bridge, which was later known as the Burnside Bridge. Two union advances were pushed back by 400 confederates - the 2nd and 20th Georgia regiment, under the command of General Toombs.

The third charge to take the bridge was at 12:30 PM. It was led by the 51st New York and the 51st Pennsylvania, who, with adequate artillery support and a promise that a recently canceled whiskey ration would be restored, if they were successfull, took the bridge after a gallant charge.

The tough Georgians had cost the Federals more than 500 casualties, giving up fewer than 160 themselves. They had stalled Burnside's assault on the southern flank for more than three hours.

I think he means the part where Hinkel explained the historical background that the screenshot was representing :P

I knew it was all historical, but the added history caption saved me a few hours of doing research into that scene.

Irish Brigade, fix bayonets!

After failed skirmishes in the morning, the 2nd Corps, including the Irish Brigade, was called upon to assault a position near the Confederate center known as the Sunken Road. At 9 AM, General Richardson's division, with the Irish Brigade in the lead, moved toward the Sunken Road.
As the Irish Brigade advanced up the crest toward the Sunken Road, it took heavy fire from the Confederates.
When Meagher asked for volunteers to run forward to take down a small fence, Corporal Samuel Wright of the 29th Massachusetts (on the right of the screenshot) sprang forward with several others.
Cpl. Wright was later awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery at Antietam. He would, over the course of successive battles, be wounded five times and reported dead twice. Despite his travails, he survived the war.

The Irish Brigade, though advancing in good order under heavy fire and delivering effective fire in return, however did not reach the Sunken Road.
