A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE REGIMENT

5th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at New Orleans, Louisiana, in May, 1861 with men from New Orleans and the parishes of St. Bernard, Bienville, De Soto, Lafourche, and Ouachita. Ordered to Virginia and assigned to the Department of the Peninsula, the unit totalled 744 men in April, 1862. During the war it was attached to General McLaws', Semmes', Hays', and York's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia.

It participated in many conflicts from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, marched with Early to the Shenandoah Valley, then was involved in the Appomattox operations. The regiment reported 27 casualties at Manassas Junction, 50 at Sharpsburg, 53 at Chancellorsville, and 7 at Second Winchester. It lost more than thirty percent of the 196 engaged at Gettysburg and had 123 captured at Rappahannock Station. Only 1 officer and 18 men surrendered in April, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Henry Forno and Theodore G. Hunt, Lieutenant Colonels William T. Dean and Bruce Menger, and Major Alexander Hart.

I am glad to be in such a great regiment, don't forget company B or C though.

One of the reasons companies was implement is to condense regiments to a more realistic size. A company of 20-25 strength is much more reasonable than 3 companies of 8.

I strongly advice against it. For now I suggest remaining Co. A as Infantry and seeing how things handle when the game is actually released.

I hate to say it but as an example glance over at my Roster. I have 0 intentions of going near another Company until the game is released.

Trust me....it will matter. Clans that use other groups names tend to find themselves blocked from the majority of the decent community.

There's zero reason to do so, as well.
Groups have the option to select their persona from an incredibly vast range of companies and regiments.

The 5th LA currently has 3 companies due to three separate regiments joining into one group that still want to remain relatively separate. Company C currently has the most active. B and C are also not reserved yet, which may or may not happen.

I'll be speaking to Ireland and Johny about this, the 3 companies are under the 5th Louisiana right now, once we go into War of Rights no one is keeping anyone from switching over with the 5th although of course that would be better for everyone, because why would you make a company that has 8 active people when you can have a 30 man regiment squeezed into 1 company, am I right?

P.S. All companies, at least the A company shares the same amount of actives if not more, just making it clear. :)

This company needs a name correction. It should be WHEAT'S Tigers, and not Wheat Tigers.

This is because the company/regiment was named for it's commander Roberdeau Wheat. Thus the name is possessive. Wheat's. not Wheat. Thanks.

It's good to see multiple Louisiana companies forming up, just one question why name them Wheat's Tigers? why not name them Hays Tigers since the 5th was under Hays command or you can name it Crescent City Guards since that was the name of Co. A. You can name it what you want I was just wondering why you named it wheats tigers is all, Hays commanded many LA. regiments throughout the war and Hays brigade and Starke's brigade swapped regiments quite a bit throughout the war so idk if the 5th was under Hays or Starkes command during the battle but I will check.
Wheat's Tigers were at the battle but they had been merged with Coppens Zouaves before the battle to form the 1st Louisiana Zouave Battalion at least i think that is what it was called but they were in Starke's Brigade during the battle.
Also if anyone is interested in a good read I recommend Lee's Tigers by Terry L. Jones it's about all the Louisiana units in the Army of Northern Virginia during the war and how fierce they were, very good read to anyone interested in Louisiana troops during the war

The company was going to get a name change anyway, Wheat's tigers was simply a name that we adopted from playing NaS. We are open to suggestions that aim to improve the company. Thank you for the information and feedback.

We're not trying to make you change the name, you are correct in the fact that they were known as Tigers, all Louisiana troops in the AnV were known as Tigers but some were more famous than others, like the 9th or 1st Special Battalion. Name them what you want, my company name isn't exactly historical either.

Hello, I have a couple questions. What is the difference between this company and the other confederate zouave company, 1st LA? I know there are several pages discussing name changes to this company, what is the final name your going with. I am looking for a Zouave company to affiliate with when this game comes out curious as to how many members you have currently, I saw 27 on the 1st page, is that accurate? and which country and time zone are you working out of? How stringent on attendence will you be on trainings, events, etc. Thanks

The 5th Louisiana wasn't a zouave company, they were an infantry company and wore regular uniforms. The 1st La zouave battalion was a zouave battalion and wore zouave uniforms.

I know, but the 5th was just a regular infantry regiment. The only LA units that I know of that wore the zouave uniform were the 1st LA Zouaves, the 10th LA, 1st LA Special Battalion Co. B "Wheats Tigers". The 1st LA Zouave and the 1st LA special battalions were merged after the battle of gaines mill to form the 1st LA Zouave Battalion. The picture that you see on the 1st page is of Co. B "Tiger Rifles" (Wheats Tigers) who were part of the 1st LA Zouaves. The 1st LA Zouaves actually had two different uniforms but they only have the Tiger Rifles uniform in game at the moment.
If you have anymore qustion just pm me or ask on the 1st LA Zouave thread, I don't want to clutter up Diversey's thread, if you have any questions about the 5th feel free to ask him.:)

I did some research...There was a crescent battalion formed in 1861 in LA who was advertised as zouaves, $50 signing bonus as well according to the newspaper. Seems 5th LA was not zouaves. I feel misled. There are no Zouave companies being formed on the union side, as far as I can find. You think someone would have created the 5th NY. Would have thought people would have wanted to capitalize on those uniforms.

Hmm, it seems as the 5thLA isn't a zouave regiment. When we created the regiment we were looking for a quick name knowing that it would be changed anyway, as we can see now it stuck. I've done my fair bit of research on the company and the regiment itself and we will stay as the 5th Louisiana Company A - Crescent City Guards Infantry. Maybe for the first few months of the war.

After the Confederate States Government started exercising it's proper authority over the administration of troops and armaments and etc., the Zouaves uniforms disappeared for the regulation gray as specified by the Confederate Government to all military suppliers of uniforms, and as specified in G. O. No. 9.

Historical reference quote here. (http://www.warofrightsforum.com/showthread.php?1006-Stretched-Goal-More-Unique-Uniforms&p=24845&viewfull=1#post24845)

The Confederate Quartermaster Supply Department issued their directive in 1861 ... True there may have still been the random state uniform that did not comply, but you can be fairly certain that by late September 1862 most of the colorful Zouaves uniforms were long gone. And this would also include those of the Union forces as well.

Sry to post again but that quote wasn't referring to the 1st Louisiana zouaves battalion seeing as it wasn't under Taylors command, it referred to Taylors brigade which commanded mostly regular infantry troops without zouave uniforms, the 1st louisiana special battalion was in Taylors brigade but only one company actually had the zouave uniform (Wheat's Tiger Rifles), after Wheat's death at gaines mill the 1st LA Special was moved to Starkes brigade and placed in The 1st La Zouave Battalion(Coppens Zouaves) so it is possible that there was some remnant of the Tiger Rifle uniform at Antietam, but after that it's very unlikely.
I'm not saying that this changes anything but I was just letting you know.

I think that applies to all baggy pants wearing regiments, as in all of them were forced to wear gray.

The Louisiana regiments didn't wear baggy pants, only the 1st La Zouave battalion and company B Wheats Tiger Rifles wore the Zouave pants. That quote wasn't referring to both Louisiana brigades, just to Taylor's brigade which only had a small company of zouaves(Wheats Tigers)

I wasn't using it as a source for the 1st, I was using is a general reference that all Zouaves did not retain their pajama uniforms but eventually were all clad in the uniforms of their respective armies based on their Quartermaster General Orders.

The Lieutenant will have a high responsibility of over 25 people in battles whenever the higher in hierarchy officer cannot show up for whatever reason.
