View Full Version : Federal or Confederate?

Arkansan

Will you play in a Federal or Confederate Company within the Company Tool?

Yes, I realize this does not bar us from playing as the other. I'm just interested in the current numbers for each side once the game enters its beginning stages.
Keep in mind I don't believe votes can be changed once they are cast. See you in battle gents!

However most of those companies consist of one man :/

Point noted, but it would be a safe bet to say the situation is typical in the southern companies as well. Just stating that the pool to draw members leans heavier for the Union. Which is completely fine by me ... because as we all know the north always had more men at any one given time than the southern forces, so I'm not too worried about it. :)

Are the plans for or will there be a War/Campaign mode like in Heroes and Generals? (like Players pick a side at the start of the Campaign and play that team for the duration) with a Commander Deploying forces and choosing where they fight next and what resources they're assigned.

He did a lot of work for the government in the years after the Civil War and was one of the few southern generals who dared to criticize Lee's actions at Gettysburg so I guess he could be viewed as a union man by some. :P

I can see that, but let's be honest and/or blunt, it's not hard to decide to "do work for the government" after you've been part of a losing effort that would otherwise have you pegged as a person of treason. It would also not be hard to criticize your once commanding General when you're on the losing side and just wish to get back to a normal life. Let's say it was likely "the path of least resistance". I just recently came across a letter that my GrGrGrandfather had to write to President Andrew Johnson, seeking amnesty after the war. It appears that Andrew Johnson's May 29, 1865 amnesty proclamation excepted certain classes of people. My Gr-Gr-Grandfather having held the Postmaster position in the small Virginian town in which he resided, I suppose before and after the war would have made him a U.S. Postmaster and a C.S.A. Postmaster, and thus making him not eligible for amnesty through the proclamation. I can only assume that his request was granted, as the picture in my signature is my GrGrGrandfather years after the war. Nicholas would have been approximately 29 when the war started, and the child on his lap in the photo was my Uncle Clyde who was born in 1908. So he obviously lived well past the war. :)

I very much doubt that it was the easiest way for him to take. He was a long time friend of President Grant (ever since West Point) so naturally there was a position ready for him when Grant got elected. Here's a quote of his: "Bad as was being shot by some of our own troops in the battle of the Wilderness, - that was an honest mistake, one of the accidents of war, - being shot at, since the war, by many officers, was worse."

Cool story regarding your ancestor! :)

Trusty,
The way I read your response, I'm getting that the quote was from Longstreet. If that's an accurate quote, I don't know a lot about Longstreet, and have no reason to doubt you, but that sounds to me feel like Longstreet didn't have a lot of officer friends on his own side, if he was getting shot at. That's crazy. From what I've read I thought Longstreet was very highly regarded by General Lee. Which you would think would have made him highly regarded by anyone who regarded Lee highly, so I have to wonder who was shooting at him after the war. Looks like I need to do some reading on Longstreet, now my interest is piqued.

Thanks for the reply concerning Nicholas' letter to the President. I had to look multiple times to make sure I was seeing things clearly, but the letter clearly had Nicholas' signature. I honestly don't know if he was a U.S. postmaster or just a postmaster after Virginia seceded.
Cool story regarding your ancestor! :)

Im still trying to figure out the numbers. :confused:
With this poll the confeds out number the union a lot and that makes me wonder. Which Faction will have more manpower? It's hard to tell which companies have how many people. Like to me right now. It seems that the Union have lots of companies. But most are empty and there is a few very large companies. Then the confederates (I don't look at the confederate regiments a lot so if this isn't true sorry) I think have almost the same amount of companies. But I think they have more companies with a moderate amount of manpower. idk.:p It's interesting though.

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!
They have laid down their lives on the bloody battle field.
Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!
Their motto is resistance – "To the tyrants never yield!"
Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

Yankee Doodle went to town
A-riding on a pony,
Stuck a feather in his cap
And called it macaroni.
Yankee Doodle keep it up,
Yankee Doodle dandy,
Mind the music and the step,
And with the girls be handy.
Father and I went down to camp,
Along with Captain Gooding,
And there we saw the men and boys
As thick as hasty pudding.
And there we saw a thousand men
As rich as Squire David,
And what they wasted every day,
I wish it could be savéd.
The 'lasses they eat every day,
Would keep a house a winter;
They have so much, that I'll be bound,
They eat it when they've a mind to.
And there I see a swamping gun
Large as a log of maple,
Upon a deuced little cart,
A load for father's cattle.
And every time they shoot it off,
It takes a horn of powder,
And makes a noise like father's gun,
Only a nation louder.
I went as nigh to one myself
As 'Siah's underpinning;
And father went as nigh again,
I thought the deuce was in him.
Cousin Simon grew so bold,
I thought he would have cocked it;
It scared me so I shrinked it off
And hung by father's pocket.
And Cap'n Davis had a gun,
He kind of clapt his hand on't
And stuck a crooked stabbing iron
Upon the little end on't
And there I see a pumpkin shell
As big as mother's basin,
And every time they touched it off
They scampered like the nation.
I see a little barrel too,
The heads were made of leather;
They knocked on it with little clubs
And called the folks together.
And there was Cap'n Washington,
And gentle folks about him;
They say he's grown so 'tarnal proud
He will not ride without 'em.
He got him on his meeting clothes,
Upon a slapping stallion;
He sat the world along in rows,
In hundreds and in millions.
The flaming ribbons in his hat,
They looked so tearing fine, ah,
I wanted dreadfully to get
To give to my Jemima.
I see another snarl of men
A-digging graves, they told me,
So 'tarnal long, so 'tarnal deep,
They 'tended they should hold me.
It scared me so, I hooked it off,
Nor stopped, as I remember,
Nor turned about till I got home,
Locked up in mother's chamber.

Plus prefer me some Blue uniform.

Primary reason i prefer the Union over the Confederates. You just can't beat those blue uniforms, especially those of Union officers.

Yes we’ll rally round the flag, boys, we’ll rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom,
We will rally from the hillside, we’ll gather from the plain,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

The Union forever! Hurrah, boys, hurrah!
Down with the traitor, up with the star;
While we rally round the flag, boys, rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

We are springing to the call with a million freemen more,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!And we’ll fill our vacant ranks of our brothers gone before,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

The Union forever! Hurrah, boys, hurrah!
Down with the traitor, up with the star;
While we rally round the flag, boys, rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

We will welcome to our numbers the loyal, true and brave,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
And although he may be poor, he shall never be a slave,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

The Union forever! Hurrah, boys, hurrah!
Down with the traitor, up with the star;
While we rally round the flag, boys, rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

So we’re springing to the call from the East and from the West,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
And we’ll hurl the rebel crew from the land we love best,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

The Union forever! Hurrah, boys, hurrah!
Down with the traitor, up with the star;
While we rally round the flag, boys, rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

Guess which side I'm on. :D ;)

Our flag is proudly floating on the land and on the main,

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

Beneath it oft we’ve conquered, and we’ll conquer oft again!

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

Our Dixie forever! She’s never at a loss!
Down with the eagle and up with the cross!
We'll rally ‘round the bonny flag, we’ll rally once again,
Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

Our gallant boys have marched to the rolling of the drums.

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

And the leaders in charge cry out, “Come, boys, come!”

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!--

Our Dixie forever! She’s never at a loss!
Down with the eagle and up with the cross!
We'll rally ‘round the bonny flag, we’ll rally once again,
Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

They have laid down their lives on the bloody battle field.

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

Their motto is resistance --“To tyrants we’ll not yield!”

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!--

Our Dixie forever! She’s never at a loss!
Down with the eagle and up with the cross!
We’ll rally ‘round the bonny flag, we’ll rally once again,
Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

While our boys have responded and to the fields have gone.

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

Our noble women also have aided them at home.

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!--

Our Dixie forever! She’s never at a loss!
Down with the eagle and up with the cross!
We'll rally ‘round the bonny flag, we’ll rally once again,
Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!
