**** 1st South Carolina rifles Company K ****

Hello ladies, gentlemen and poor wee neutrals I would like to invite you to join the Marshall Guards and the Calhoun Guards who together form the 1st battalion 1St South Carolina rifles EU We are a pair of companies formed to be GMT zone based we are looking primarily for EU players but anyones welcome. We are a line company however like most companies of the era we will practice in skirmishing. We aim to be akin to the grenadier companies of Europe during this time where we will be the bravest and smartest dressed in the regiment haha. Part of the platoon system is to make us more flexible so we can deploy a platoon or section forward to scout or skirmish.

[Regimental And Company History]

On 20 July 1861, James Lawrence Orr organized the First South Carolina Rifle Regiment at Sandy Springs South Carolina, in July, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Abbeville, Pickens, Anderson, and Marion.

Companies K and K were formed from men of Anderson county in South Carolin https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Anderson_County,_South_Carolina#Military See link for detailed information.

First posted to Sullivan's Island, SC to defend Charleston Harbor, others called them the "Pound Cake Regiment" in reference to their "light" garrison duty. In April 1862, the full-strength 1,000-man unit was transferred to Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia (ANV). In June, it was incorporated into Gregg's Brigade, of A.P. Hill's Light Division, of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson Corps (often termed the "Left Wing" early in the war). Later the regiment endured the hardships of the Petersburg trenches and the Appomattox operations. Of the 537 engaged at Gaines' Mill , fifty-nine percent were killed, wounded or missing. The unit reported 116 casualties at Second Manassas and 170 at Fredericksburg , then lost forty-nine percent of the 233 at Chancellorsville and three percent of the 366 at Gettysburg . There were 12 killed and 81 wounded at The Wilderness , 15 killed, 36 wounded, and 44 missing at Spotsylvania , 3 killed and 34 wounded at Deep Bottom , and 9 killed and 37 wounded at Poplar Springs Church .

It surrendered 9 officers and 148 men.

Recruitment

We are a mature casual fun loving company with a love of living history.
We understand people have life's out with gaming which is but a hobby so to that end we will not be having compulsory events. I'll post a proper event schedule later but we are thinking of a weekday training session then one European event at the weekend. We aim to not only create a "clan" but a community and some of us already play other games together using the same community principles which works really well.
If you would like to join please ping myself or semajrednaxeala a message with the basic details below and we will get back to you.

The company was accepted in state service at Sunflower County, Mississippi, on 18 May, 1861, and was accepted in Confederate service, under the command of Captain B G Humphreys, on 2 July, 1861. The company was ordered to Richmond, Virginia, on 31 July, 1861, and was mustered in Confederate service by Major H L Clay, assistant adjutant general, Confederate States Army, at Lynchburg, Virginia, on 9 August, 1861. The company arrived by the Orange & Alexandria Railroad at Camp Pickens, near Manassas Junction via Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and Gordonsville, Orange County, Virginia, on 10 August, 1861, and Captain B G Humphreys was appointed colonel, 21st Mississippi Infantry, on 11 September, 1861. First Lieutenant T S Gibson was appointed captain in September 1861.

taken from page 14-15 of the osprey book the confederate army (1) south carolina and mississippi. (ive clipped big bits for ease of typing.)

Proof of a uniform in use right the way to 1864 which i hope is added.

"uniforms supplied to the first SC rifles were state made.from the districts the companies were from."

"Field officers were to wear dark blue double breasted frock coats with 2 rows of eight buttons. green velvet standing collar edged with gilt lace cuffs also faced with green velvet with two small buttons on the back seam, and skirts edged in 1 inch green velvet trim. Described as full in the legs trousers were also dark blue, trimmed with inch wide gold lace on the outer seams. Hats were patterned after 1862 US regulations broad brimmed black felts with a black ostrich feather, and the right side looped up by a gold cord to a small brass button. A gilt palmetto ornament was specified for the side of the turned up brim. while a gilt US infantry bugle horn adorned the front of the crown"

"Officer's rank insignia for orrs rifles (this regiment) was influenced by a version of the CS uniform regulations published unofficially in the souther press in 1861. Sleeves remained plain while a system of gilt stars decorated the collar. Those who chose to follow official CS regulations issued the following month but misinterpreted the wording placed straight bars of gold braid along the outer seam (2 for captain and 1 for LT) simply including the number of braids but not the official austrian knots."

"Staff and company officers wore single breasted, nine button frock coats of dark blue trimmed on collar breast and cuffs with green velvet. Pants (trousers for uk people) were also dark blue with green stripes. hats were the same for field officers."

"The SGTMJR and Quartermaster sgt wore the same uniform sas company officers minus the green trim on the coat and with gold lace chevrons on the upper arm."

"Enlisted men wore a Dark Blue frock coat and pants trimmed like company officers but with narrow worsted green braid."

"NCOs chevrons were also green worsted, point down above the elbow for sgts, "commencing with four for the First Sergeant, and diminishing one for each sgt"
Corporal chevrons were worn point upwards below the elbow, "four for the first Corporal and diminishing one for each corporal"."

Hats for NCOs and privates were the same for officers minus the feather with a 2 inch high palmetto insignia on the front above a one inch company letter"

By mid august 1861 the uniforms were still being made and based on photographic evidence Grey cloth was now being used to replace older uniforms in the same patterns. The state quartermasters continued to supply these uniforms until 1864

I support you and your men making a battalion I just think it would be unfair to the men from other districts (counties weren't around during the civil war) like Pickens and Oconee and Etc, but I say just call yourself the Orr's Rifles Battalion! Hope you don't mind my SC touch there!

Oh no don't want to mess with the historical regiment name but itnstead of saying first battalion and we use Anderson county battalion of the 1St south Carolina Rifles as most people in the companies were recruited from that county. Don't want to mess with history. We already are a battalion just making a name as others might be known as the first battalion.

In South Carolina men were receuited from their districts which would later become counties

So there wasn't a Anderson county, but there was an Anderson District

Ach same thing and a source I looked at refer to it as a county needles to say Anderson is where most of the lads are from :-D . The guys are happy with the name anyways as it will give us an identity different them outher 1stSCR battalion formations.

After Sunday it's back to normal shifts so can get back involved.

Afternoon folks quick announcement.

After careful reflection we will be reducing to 1 company for the time being which will be commanded by semajrednaxeala. I will be the adjutant and run the admin side but with the release of star citizen 3.0 later this year my role as a senior officer within my organisation I don't think I'll have the time to run multiple fronts fully. In the short term very little will change however when we start training semajrednaxeala will be deciding how that works etc.

That you
Mark

See you on the battlefield.

Dear Rifles

Apologies for the long wait without any news. For myself and for the Captain who is currently indisposed between jobs, its been a busy month on the real life side of things. However with the the 4th map being released for skirmish mode if there's people about i'm more than happy to arrange an evening trying them out and getting to know each other. We will begin training when the captain is back online regularly. I hope you guys are enjoying the game and feel free to bring along your friends and colleagues of any gender and age and join us.

Feel free to join the discord group and the steam group.

welcome to the company kind sir. No dates for a gathering so far everyone's in hibernation waiting for the game to be more complete however if there is demand for an event or gathering its worth looking into. I know Jack has been busy with work recently and not able to play much of anything and ive been preoccupied with a family member in hospital so apologies if at the moment replies are a little slow :( I shall add you to the steam group and ill have to chase up those that haven't joined the discord group yet haha.

Have you had a chance to play the game yet? ive not played in a while but i do hope to upgrade my rig in the coming days if ive time so will get it WoR updated haha
