The Camden Volunteers of South Carolina
Organized on January 8, 1861, The Camden Volunteers were called into active service on April 9,
1861. The Camden Volunteers departed for Richmond on April 24, 1861 and were mustered into state
service on May 23, 1861. The Volunteers were one of the four companies of the 2nd SC Infantry to participate in the First Battle of Manassas. The volunteers would participate in 28 major battles including Fort Sumter, 1st Manassas,Savage Station, Malvern Hill, Harper's Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Wilderness, Spotsylvannia Court House, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Deep Bottom, Cedar Creek, Averasboro, and Bentonville before surrendering at Bennet House. All of this and multiple other enagments left a toll on the volunteers, losing more than half there numbers by the end of the war. They were on of the few units to be created before Fort Sumter and surrender after Bentonville. Their Captains were John Doby Kennedy (Later Colonel and Brigadier General) and William Zachariah Leitner (Later Major).
