I was reading a history of soda and it said that by the late 1850s soda became commercialised the most common was tonic water and club soda as we would call them today. Would the common soldier ever have gotten his hands on this?

Considering the vast amounts of soldiers coming from all of America, it'd be basically impossible that not even a few would have gotten some, at least if it was considered a serious thing at the time.

Interesting topic! This (http://bottleden.com/about.shtml)site is specifically about bottles of the period, but the last 2 paragraphs discusses a little about the soda's and the bottles that were produced. The page refers to "the big upsurge in soda production.." being between 1845 and 1860.
