Yep, goin this weekend, I'm still curious if I'm gonna see myself in it. From what I've seen I think it will be good, kinda sucks that I already know whats gonna happen for the most part.

Love they made this website . Actually giving us the footnotes for the movie...
I really wish that would be come something common with historical movies and TVseries.

FOREWORD

We felt it was important in an historical movie, especially a movie about such a crucial time in history, for the audience to know what was true and what was fictionalized, even if it was based on underlying source material.

In this site you will be able to navigate through the entire movie, click the areas that interest you, and see a brief explanation of the historical facts that informed the screenplay. If you are more curious about that part of the movie, we have footnoted the paragraph to see sources on which it is based. But footnotes themselves can be misleading, so if you want to see the entire primary source, you can click again and be transported to the original document. We hope this is helpful, maybe even fun. Some things need to be invented in a movie, but most things in Jones were not. I think it’s only right that you be able to tell which was which.

Friends,

I regret to inform you that the movie "Free State of Jones" is going to be very wrong on a lot of things.

Newton Kight claimed that he was "conscripted" into the rebel army. This record indicates he enlisted in Company K, 8th MS Infantry, in August, 1861, eight months before the first draft law was passed.

They claim that the "tax in kind" law was the reason Knight deserted and that Confederate forces "raided Jones County to take property to pay this "tax in kind". Knight and many Jones County people did not make enough money or have enough property to fall under this law.

Have ya'll done any reading up on Newton Knight and the "Free State Of Jones"?

It's Hollywood, don't expect much when it comes to accuracy unless it's by HBO or something.

1. Have you seen the movie?

2. Also if he actually claimed what you write, then having him claim that in the movie is not incorrect... they would correctly be repeating something that was said... even if the statement is a lie.

I hope to be able to watch it at some point.

I don't expect too much from Hollywood as far as being faithful to the story of Newton Knight. He was after all, a very controversial fellow who arguably was more of a ruthless criminal than a union Loyalist. Hollywood is just trying to make a movie with some social justice hero. Unfortunately, for them that means revering a just as likely criminal.

Jones County's marshes, hell all Mississippi marshes, look nothing like they do in the movie. I can say that with absolute certainty as Jones County is a short distance north of mine and I pass through it relatively often.

it wont be good the guy that did it did not lead a slave revolt and he was kicked out of both armies
it is horribly pc and shows the south and southerners in a bad light

and this is from one of the historical advisers and many people who made and watched the movie

That's because the movie was filmed in Louisiana, near Covington. Don't remember filming in a marsh, it was mostly Cyprus swamp, though we were near a crawfish pond that kinda looked like a marsh.

And i'm afraid that they'll do something like
that.
