Time for another poll :D . Union or Confederacy, or maybe you are a neutral fella. Now, please don't get any arguments going. Let's keep things friendly, but judging how this community has been in the past, it shouldn't be a problem. At the most, let's get a good political discussion going if that's ok with the forum admins? Now me? Confederacy all the way. Born south of the Mason-Dixon. Can't help myself.

Well im not trying to start the 2nd American civil war here but it seems like alot of people find the confederacy more "attractive" for reasons such as the south in the civil war has been so romanticized for many years, The Confederacy fighting for their rights (much like the 13 colonies did) Also they were practically the underdogs the ill equipped and supplied army that drug the war out for 4 long years....They're are many other reasons but I feel these three are perhaps the biggest. But it is always important to remember that no matter what uniform they wore no matter what cause they fought for they were Americans and should be honored and remembered as such! I know many of you aren't Americans but these men are still soldiers who fought a Bloody war with some pretty advanced military hardware using old tactics that resulted in over 600,000 casualties. I think its interesting to see what side people choose and in my opinion you follow your heart just as the soldiers who fought did :)

New research from J. David Hacker suggests a much higher count than the 600,000 that has been so long accepted. His research indicates 750,000. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/03/science/civil-war-toll-up-by-20-percent-in-new-estimate.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

With all the uncertainties, Dr. Hacker said, the data suggested that 650,000 to 850,000 men died as a result of the war; he chose the midpoint as his estimate.
He emphasized that his methodology was far from perfect. “Part of me thinks it is just a curiosity,” he said of the new estimate.
Well, i do believe that the death toll was fantastically high due to diseases and the lack of medical knowledge/ possibilities, but the given quote makes me wonder how trustworthy those numbers are
PvtPalmer11pvi
07-14-2014, 06:32 PM
Ah Victorian Era Medical Knowledge
802
Also this statement Besides the aggregate death count, researchers could learn that the Fifth New Hampshire lost more soldiers (295 killed) than any other Union regiment. I can not believe this.
Is this Killed in Battle? Killed in battle plus those who died from wounds and infection? There is a huge hole in the information given.
The 11th PVI
Killed and died of wounds 12 Officers
219 Men
Died of Diseases, etc.. 4 Officers
167 Men
That's 402 Killed So I can not believe that statement at all sir

We will never know the exact total. As for the 5th NH, Wikipedia (not a scholarly source) says: "The 5th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment has the unfortunate distinction of having sustained the greatest total loss in battles of any infantry or cavalry regiment in the Union Army, with a total of 295 killed and 756 wounded, for a total of 1,051 men." It appears that this excludes death from disease, etc.
PvtPalmer11pvi
07-14-2014, 11:45 PM
You are right we will never know an exact number.. Men who were missing may have been killed and never found. Bizarre it would exclude death in other forms than in combat. I mean A soldier who died of some kind of infection or disease is still a Regimental Causality right? I suppose they are just looking into deaths as a result of engagements. I wonder if the is including soldiers dying from wounds or infections caused by wounds. I mean in my opinion those are still battle casualties. However thank you for the information I am going to have to read up on the 5th NH. I must say I was really expecting the 6th Wisconsin or the 69th New York to have the Highest Casualty rates.

Well, both sides were relatively organised, minus the first 3 months or so when it was practically chaos. The Union did have a more uniform uniform (see what I did there) but the confederacy also had it's own set of battle organisation.

Grits are ground up corn with water. It sounds gross, but it is basically a breakfast mush. Think oatmeal except not sweet. You usually add butter, salt and sometimes cheese to it. I am also very fond of shrimp in my grits :)
I believe northerners have something similar to grits called "Palenta" which is basically the Italian take on grits. :P
