View Full Version : Bacon?
So this is a little off topic in terms of the game, but seeing as how many knowledgeable civil war buffs peruse this forum, I was seeking info and clarification on the topic of "bacon" in regards to the American Civil War. What the hell is bacon? It was consumed by northern and southern troops alike. It was foul, (nausa bacon) and fair, (most Union bacon) but what was it? Salt Pork? Fresh pork? Our modern idea of "
Bacon?" I would love some clarification!
This is bretty freakin' important, you all.

Damn right. Anyone who has read anything about the Civil War knows that bacon was more important than rifles or ammunition.

"Letters from Civil War soldiers contain numerous references to bacon, but historians believe that the term bacon was used for all salt and smoked pork, not just the strips of meat that we now call “bacon."

The bacon during the civil war was quite different from today's bacon. I would have to agree with trusty bacon during the civil war was cured and smoked pork not in the thin strips like we have today but in chunks or large slices.
