HISTORY

The 59th New York included recruits mainly from the streets of New York City and its environs, from upstate New York, and also a prominent group from north central Ohio. The regiment was mustered in from August 2, 1861 to October 30, 1861 and first commanded by Colonel William L. Tidball. After training in New York, the men of the 59th were assigned to the defense of Washington, D.C., and then, in July 1862, to the Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac.

Antietam

The 59th fought its first severe action at the Battle of Antietam, where it was part of the ill-fated advance of Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick’s division into the West Woods, near the Dunker Church. In the chaos of that battle, part of the regiment purportedly fired into the rear of the friendly 15th Massachusetts ahead of them. The 59th New York itself escaped the maelstrom after losing 224 men killed, wounded, and missing, including the loss of 8 officers. A monument at Antietam marks the spot where Lieutenant Colonel John L. Stetson fell mortally wounded.

Gettysburg

At Gettysburg, the 59th occupied a position on the right of Hall's line on Cemetery Ridge. There it fought on July 2 against the assault of Brig. Gen. Ambrose R. Wright. Sergeant James Wiley of Company B was credited with capturing the battle flag of the 48th Georgia. Lt. Col. Thoman fell mortally wounded in the action that evening and was replaced by Captain William McFadden of Ohio. The regiment occupied the same position on July 3 against the Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble Assault, during which was wounded its young adjutant, Lieutenant William H. Pohlman.

I think you made an error in selecting your company name. The 58th New York was known as the Polish Legion. There is no Polish association with the 59th New York. If your interest is primarily your Polish heritage, then you should change regiments. If it is based on a family ancestor having been in the 59th New York, then a more appropriate name for Company B would be the "U.S. Van Guard".

Company B was formed from Captain Philip W. Smith’s company of the U.S. Van Guard regiment which was under the command of Colonel William L. Tidball. It was called into the service of the United States by the President on August 9, 1861. The company was mustered into the regiment by the mustering officer, Captain F. S. Larned of the 12th Regiment, U.S. Infantry on the same date at New York City, New York. The period of enrollment was for three years unless sooner discharged. Commanding the company at the time of mustering was Captain Philip W. Smith. Other company officers were 1st Lieutenant Milo E. Gifford, 2nd Lieutenant Jerome B. Taft, and 1st Sergeant Ambrose F. Cole. The total number of men listed on the original muster roll was 83. By the time of the regiment’s organization, 2nd Lieutenant Jerome B. Taft was replaced by 2nd Lieutenant Alfred Myrick.

The 59th Regiment of New York State Volunteers was formed primarily by the consolidation of incomplete regiments from New York City, upstate New York and Ohio. The federal government had granted authority to individuals to form regiments but they were not able to complete the task. These incomplete regiments were combined along with four companies and the 59th was organized on October 19, 1861 at Green Point (East New York). The regiment was mustered in the service of the United States for three years between August 2 and October 24, 1861.
