Thought I'd put this thread up if nobody else has, or if the prior one's died. Civil war ancestors?
My direct patrilineal ancestor who fought was Daniel W. Graham, served 1861-1862 as a volunteer, re-classified as a conscript on new year's eve due to the April 16th Conscript act of the Confederacy.
He was a farmer from Floral College, North Carolina, who volunteered for the 24th North Carolina, company G. He was described as being 5'11, with light hair, blue eyes, and a 'sallow' complexion. Fought in the battles of Malvern Hill, Sharpsburg (or Antietam, as the north knows it) and the battle of Fredricksburg. He participated also in the Petersburg campaign at the battles of the Crater and Bermuda Hundred.
He and a majority of his regiment were captured at Sayler's Creek, and sent first to Point Lookout, then Johnson's Island, before returning home. He would father Daniel Arch Graham Sr. in 1872, who is my great-great grandfather.

none in the American Civil War but since you never specified what civil war I can say my dads side of my family were Presbyterian and during the English Civil War were Covenanters.

I'm currently trying to track down one that I believe was Virginia militia, what sites are you using for military records?

One that I used was the National Park Service's find a soldier application. It can be found here. https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-soldiers.htm
Once you know what regiment and company he was in, you can email the National Archives to get his muster roll for free. Email them at archives1reference@nara.gov
Also you might try online records of the state of Virginia.

Trying to track down what I think are 3 Georgian Confederates.
Is there any possible way to find an ancestor if you don't know their first name?
Other than through Ancestry.com of course.

Ancestry.com is your best bet of course, I'm not sure of many other ways.
Start with the farthest member of your family that you can remember that you know the First, middle, and last name of. Then look for records of them and trace back through things like census records, etc.
It's pretty much all gonna cost you some money, nothins free as far as I know.
You could try websites like family search, they have some free stuff on there.

I have a couple of Great, Great, Great Grand fathers on my father's maternal side that were both in Virginia militias at the start of the war in 1861. Both milita regiments disbanded, not sure if they reenlisted in another regiment or not.

Found mine through some digging. His name was Thomas Henry Hirum Rigdon, though he signed his enlistment papers Henry H. Rigdon. He was a Private in the 47th Georgia Volunteer Regiment, Company F. He joined in 1863, and later became a POW.
He also had two sons who served, both of them died, one from getting shot at gettysburg, the other from Typhoid Fever, but I have to get their records later this week.

Private Francis Asbury Taylor is the only direct ancestor I've found. He son had the same name, a couple more down and my great grandfather had the same name (my grandfather never knew why he changed his name to that until I found this). And now I have the same last name.
He was in the Inglis Light Artillery, Co. I 2nd South Carolina Artillery Regiment. The only battle I could come close to being sure he fought in was at Bentonville as Infantry.

I've got a couple members of my family who fought in the Civil War. I don't know how they did or what regiments they were assigned to but I know that they survived.
