Shortly after the secession of the Confederate States, and amidst the sudden flurry of military activity that gripped Virginia, the 8th Virginia Infantry Regiment was raised at Leesburg, Virginia, during May to July of 1861. It drew recruits from the nearby counties Loudon, Prince William and Fairfax, with Company H being formally instated in the regiment on the 13th of July, 1861, just 8 days before the First Bull Run. As part of Cocke’s brigade the regiment played an important role in the Confederate counter-attack during the afternoon of the First Bull Run, advancing alongside the 18th Va. to push several Yankee regiments back in disarray. In October 1861 they were involved in the Battle of Ball’s Bluff, and in March 1862 left Loudon County to join the Peninsula Campaign. After Gaine’s Mill, where the regiment went forward stoically into Yankee fire, Colonel Hunton began referring to his men as ‘The Bloody Eighth’, in recognition of their bravery and readiness to fight regardless of the odds.

During the Battle of Antietam the Bloody Eighth defended Sharpsburg, drawn up on the eastern face of the town with the rest of Garnett’s Brigade. By 17:00, the 8th and 18th were sent forward to defend the line of guns drawn up before Sharpsburg, until they were forced back by the Union advance.

The regiment served on through the rest of the war, suffering heavily at Gettysburg. There, on the third day, the regiment took part in Pickett’s Charge, going through the hellish advance for 30 minutes. Such was the volume of fire they received that their colour was lost when there was nobody left to carry it, each successive bearer having been gunned down. Such was the hammering the 8th had taken that their moniker ‘The Bloody Eighth’ proved apt - they recorded a 90% casualty rate for the battle. They would never recover their strength, as by the war’s end the 8th Va. only had 12 men left to surrender, one of those being a surgeon.

The 'virtual' 8th Virginia Infantry Regiment is the War of Rights persona for the Lucky Dogs, a group of friends who've been gaming & socialising together for the past four years. As a group we have been active across a wide variety of multiplayer games; Mount&Blade: Warband (vanilla plus mods: Vikingr, The Deluge & others), ArmA2 & 3 (& DayZ), IL2 Sturmovik games (notably Cliffs of Dover), Naval Action & others. Whilst not a large group, it is certainly a close one. Geographically the group is primarily European, but we do have members further afield (including a true Virginian, no less!).

Our group prides itself on our combined interest in history and take pains to get the units/personas we represent 'right'. As such with our approach to representing Company H of the 8th Va. we will be looking to bring as close a representation to Confederate line infantry as possible, whilst enjoying ourselves at the same time. We are a very relaxed group who like to avoid the strict nature of many clans. We don't really bother too much with strict training, and our officers/NCOs take up their positions voluntarily as a means of giving direction for our other members to enhance their experience, rather than to achieve gratification through a virtual 'rank'.

We are currently recruiting, however we are looking for those over the age of twenty-one and of a similar mind to ourselves. Exceptions can be made under certain circumstances. Feel free to contact for more information!

A fine evening to you all! It is unfortunate that we were forced to amend our choice (http://www.warofrightsforum.com/showthread.php?901-19th-Virginia-Volunteer-Infantry-Regiment-Co-A-quot-Monticello-Guard-quot) in regiment and company however it is no bother. We have settled on the 8th VA, Company 'H', owing to their historical recruiting proximity to the location of one of our American fellows. And so on, so forth, yadda yadda yadda...

So this is our new home then. Regardless of how we got here, I must say I am feeling quite comfortable with it. Perhaps this company will make us flourish even more. After all, the number eight is commonly associated with eternity. May the Company H of the 8th Virginia Infantry Regiment live long and bless all us Potomac Greys loyal to it!

Our recruiter is notoriously fickle to the tune of a few dollars and a piece of paper 'verifying' ones age! I'm sure the occasional exception may be made from time to time. ;)

Gentlemen, have a care.
I return forthwith to the United States after a brief sojourn in Italy. I have been fortunate enough to spend a small amount of time with the compatriots of Garibaldi, he whom is also fighting against oppression and tyranny.

Warmest regards all,

Fine evening Gentlemen,
It would appear that Billy Blue was not up to task on this cold All Hallow's Eve. A shame; I had prepared small pieces of 'popping' candy made of black powder and liquorice for the devils.

---

A warm welcome must also be extended to our newest recruit Jakobus Herkulaas Wernicke, a Dutch-born scoundrel whom has found his way to the Great State of Virginia through Charleston and passage of a wily schooner.

---

And as a note to all; we are looking for folk to join our merry band, more so if you enjoy Naval Action and other such pastimes, feel free to PM for more information.

Have a care Gentlemen! C.L Buckhannon may be welcomed warmly into the bosom of Confederacy and our motley group of the 8th Virginia. It would seem, however, that he is distantly related to our esteemed Corporal William "Little Willy" Lambert - something about the far off land of Wales? I am sure that he will see off each Yankee bully with a dogged determination and a renown only the Welsh may know!

Sincerely,
Captain Jim J. Digby.

May we extend our warmest of welcomes to the freshly enlisted Armin Schlatter. This man, so he claims, is a descendent of the Old World Swiss folk - and an illustrious one at that. On enlistment he spoke something or something about a matchlock band and some wily English fellows who carasouled about Europe without much due care. Still; the man is a Virginian, welcome him in and pour out a drink!

Over the last few months we've acquired a few more souls to stand in our battle line. Rough men all, but salt of the earth (and all that). With such an influx of recruits we have found it neccessary to expand the number of NCOs we have; to whit W. Waltman Jr. has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant. A fine, upright fellow with a strong voice, he will assist Cpt. Digby and myself in keeping our rogues in hand - that is until we can unleash them at the point of bayonet upon the foe!

Congratulations Sergeant Waltman, we're certain you'll set a fine example to our men. Hip-hip-huzzah!

Good morning Gentlemen.
Several of us within the 8th VA have begun playing a lightly modded version of 'Scourge of War: Gettysburg' again. It would be a great pleasure if folk would desire to join us once or twice a month in the endeavour of sitting in the saddle. As of this moment we are currently playing with zero restriction on camera movement, use of couriers or choice in OOB - this is temporary as we reacquaint ourselves once more. Typically though we adhere to HITS (HQ in the Saddle) locked to 80 yards, voice communication (relating to the game) allowed only when one is deemed to be within shouting distance and explicit use of courier messages across the chain of command.

Feel free to respond here, or send a PM, and we can discuss further.

---

As an addendum, we'll be picking up our M-16s and heading out in to the jungle later this evening too in Rising Storm II. If you're in Europe and of a sensible nature (and strictly 21+), feel free to find me (http://steamcommunity.com/id/leifreiriksson/) on Steam and join us as we take the fight to Charlie. Joints and beer suggested as additional gear but not mandatory...

Cheers, one and all.

Have a care, Gentlemen.
The long nights are beginning to draw away towards the cusp of Spring and, with that, an opening of passes and roads that had previously been closed. The most perfidious of seasons will soon be upon us, and quicker than one may imagine. I am led to believe that many of you have endured the passing of this winter with the most base of garments, threadbare and of poor value. Rest assured that I have written several times to the excellent and honourable Colonel Hunton in the endeavour of acquiring clothing for the approaching year.

Your commendable valour and ever-lasting committment to the cause will never be forgotten, at home or abroad.

One, and all.

Well as I previously mentioned, we have generally kept 'off-field' for lack of men with access to the current phase. That has changed somewhat now as several bought in to the Sergeant tier, I desire only now for Steam to release more keys. I think it's reasonable to say that we can begin stretching our legs now and show face across Maryland. The great boon of belonging to the 8th Virginia is that historically the regiment only managed some 20-30 odd men for South Mountain and Sharpsburg, we do not have to aim particularly high to manage a historical representation. :p

While not everyone's cup of tea, I artificially capped my company at 66 to honor the men of my company that were at Sharpsburg. I can't imagine ever having 66 active players (we're doing remarkably well with 20 someodd), but it is the thought that counts, IMHO.

Excellent.
I think it is a worthwhile thing to pursue accurate numbers in the respective companies, I dread to think of the challenge ahead of some of the larger Union regiments though. :p

To the honourable Captain Digby, H company, 8th Virginia regiment.

Sir,
Though it pains me immensely that our great and noble nation should tear itself apart in such a brutal and savage manner, in this descent into armed conflict, I cannot in good conscience side with an aggressor who would put first their laws and demands above the freedom of the common man. I denounce forthwith the aggression shown by the federal government and it's puppet figurehead President Lincoln, I proclaim that I shall enlist at once in the great army of Virginia and serve my beloved home in this our second war of independence.

Well looks like the 72ndPA and 8th VA fired at one another lol!

On May 7, 1862, the 72nd Pennsylvania embarked on transports and proceeded up the York River to West Point. Debarking from their vessels, the regiment moved to the banks of the Chickahominy River. The Philadelphia Brigade now formed a part of Sedgwick's Division, of Sumner's II Corps. The 72nd Pennsylvania then participated in the Battle of Seven Pines, AKA Fair Oaks, fought on May 31 - June 1, 1862. The Philadelphia Brigade formed line on the right of the First Brigade, the 72nd on the right of the 71st Pennsylvania. As no hostile force appeared, the brigade was moved by the flank and changed front, which brought it upon the enemy's flank and forced him to fall back from his position in the cleared field and into the woods.

Ricketts' Battery was now advanced, and the regiment was posted to repel attacks by the 8th Virginia Infantry, the same regiment that had defeated them at Ball's Bluff seven months earlier. The 8th Virginia soldiers charged the positions of Ricketts' Battery, but the 72nd Pennsylvania unleashed a devastating volley upon their soldiers, repulsing them. For about an hour, the 72nd Pennsylvania and the 8th Virginia exchanged volleys at one another across the fields, with losses low but steady on both regiments. Finally, the battle ended inconclusively with neither side gaining an advantage over the other. After the battle lines were advanced and fortified, stretching from the Chickahominy River away towards White Oak Swamp. For a month, the 72nd Pennsylvania remained upon this line, the enemy in front, and his sharpshooters keeping up a constant fusillade of fire.

Aha, most excellent! At some point between Gaines's Mill and Antietam the 8th Virginia was whittled down to some 34 men(!).

I would also like to take this moment to welcome John Cooper and Armin Schlatter to the Company. These men have expressed an interest locally in enlistment but had, until now, dallied on the signing of their papers. Both are to be admitted and mustered with due haste, battle is afoot!

I hear tell that there is a legitimate Virginian amongst you. Is that true?

I too am a legitimate Virginian, I'm looking forward to meeting your company in game!

We will look forward to seeing you on the field of battle, Master SteeleD11B.

I think I can speak on behalf of Captain Digby and the rest of Co. H in welcoming our newest recruits and thanking them on the élan they've brought to our ranks. As Sergeant, I would also like to congratuate the Company as a whole for their improvement in skirmishing and marksmanship; those Yankee flagbearers are certainly in trouble when they're in your sights.

If it weren't a problem, Thomas "Tam" C. Ross would like to put his mark on the dotted line for the 8th Virginia Infantry.

Mr Thomas C. Ross, your enlistment bounty of $25 has been released. The State of Virginia will furnish your person for movement against Northern Aggression! Until otherwise decided or the arrangement made void, you are now serving under the admirable and excellent Army of Northern Virginia for a term of three years henceforth. With the good grace and authority of the State Governor Mr John Letcher, we welcome you to Company 'H' of the 8th Virginia Regiment. Godspeed!

---

Have a care fellows!
The fair and admirable women of Loudoun County have laboured long to produce a set of cockades for the company. These ribbons have been made in celebration of our Great State and the men who carry arms in the Army of Northern Virginia, you are free to wear one upon your hat or breast as you desire. We must remember always the suffering with which our kinder halves bear in our absence, our sweethearts, mothers and wives. Bear them in mind as we settle in to winter encampments and perhaps a furlough may be granted before long.

And with that said, a final parting word below.

To one and all this fair Yuletide! Hail the blest morn!
As our guns are put to rest and weary feet allowed but a moment's repose, may we reflect upon a fruitful and enterprising year.
On behalf of the 8th Virginia Company 'H', I would beseech many warm blessings and a Merry Christmas upon both the Blue and Grey.

The 52nd New York Infantry soldierly answers the Yuletide greetings of our lost brothers down south of the brave 8th Virginia! We can all but hope that this struggle finds a quick end and the bloodshed among our Nation comes to an end. But until this day may come, we are called to stand against our enemies on the battlefields, this short but deadly gap.

with the highest respect,

Company A, 52nd New York State Volunteer Infantry

Afternoon Gentlemen.
We are to shake off our melancholy of the season and attend to morning reveille come this Saturday. Come, arouse your spirits and warm the feet.

Captain Jim J. Digby.

Saturday 8:30PM.
If the drilling is good, we may find some field in which to shoot at poor Billy Yank shortly after.

Gentlemen of Company H!

Muster is at 8 pm GMT this Saturday! We will be following a similar structure to the last session: marching & firing drill, and skirmishing/marksmanship at the Drill Camp, followed by engaging those Yankees out in the fields of Maryland.

We look forward to seeing you there!
