Hello, quick introduction. I am currently working on my first Novel. It is not a civil war Novel per se but the main character is a veteran of the Civil war and he was captured at Gettysburg. He was with the 4th Texas and was promoted to first sargeant just after the Battle of Gaines Mill a year earlier. This is pretty significant to his story because after he is captured he ends up in a POW camp and thats when his life gets weird and that is where the plot of my novel unfolds. My question is, would a first sargeant carry a musket like the rest of his troops? I guess it would be an Enfield from what I have researched, or would he carry a pistol and if so what kind and possibly a saber? I can't seem to find any info on that. I discovered this game while doing my research for the Novel and I am about to become a backer becuase it looks awesome but I still have a novel to right so any help with this question would be greatly appreciated.

First sergeants carried normal rifle muskets. Some men privately purchases pistols or large knives in the early stages of the war, but these were personal items, often single-shot and largely discharged as the war progressed. It's not likely he'd be carrying the 1840 NCO sword, as men found them cumbersome and it made them stand out as a target. It's not impossible, but I would recommend giving your character just his musket.

What will the novel be called?
Thank you for the reply. The Novel is actually a horror story. The plot is a little twisted. The Main Character is named Cogan Brant. Him and his brother Johnny serve in the 4th Texas. they are captured at Gettysburg and sent to a POW camp where they discover that the Sadistic and mentally unstable camp commander, a Union Colonel, is actually a werewolf and he uses the prisoners as his own personal herd of feeding stock. After the commander kills and devours his brother in front of him, First sargeant Brant escapes and he spends the next 13 years hunting down the camp Commander to take his revenge.Along the way he kills many other werewolves until he finally catches up with the Colonel in the small town of Slimchance Arizona in 1876. The novel is a work in progress so the title is not firm yet but I am leaning toward "Moon" or possibly "Pale Moon". I am aiming for historical accuracy and the time that the main character serves in the Confederate Army is kind of where he learns who he is and those chapters dedicated to the war years will be used as character development for both the Antagonist( The Colonel) and the Protangonist (Cogan Brant).
