Hi all--
The regimental history of my Ancestor's regiment, the 24th North Carolina, discusses their role in the battle of Sharpsburg (or, known to the north as the battle of Antietam)
and it discusses how they charged a union regiment positioned on a stone wall near the West Woods. Anyone know if there was such a stone wall?

Why would your ancestor's historical writer write something that wasn't true? Why would you even question it?

Of course there are many different types of walls, fences, and other obstructions on the Antietam battlefield to this day.

It's not that I question it. I'm just unsure where such a wall is, and am looking for someone who knows the battlefield to see where such would be around the west woods.

There are numerous such walls throughout the battlefield. Advancing with Robert Ransom's brigade, the 24th NC became engaged in helping push back John Sedgwick's division and then the 24th advanced alongside William Barksdale's brigade and also engaged elements of the Federal First Corps. These actions ranged from the south end of the West Woods, the middle of the woods, and northern fringe of the West Woods, so the writer could be referencing any of those moments.

A wall that may have been there during the battle may not be there now or 100 years ago. such a battle would change the landscape significantly. Walls, trees, and even building that where there; after that day may never be see again.

It was definitely there but as MAC said, this wall probably isn't there anymore.

Thanks, all. I appreciate the answers, I was unsure if there was a specific wall but I suppose I hadn't taken that into consideration.

Unrelated to the original discussion, Walker's division (of which Ransom's brigade was a part) tried to counter-attack towards the Cornfield after repulsing Sedgewick but got stopped hard by Yankee artillery. Probably for the best, though, seeing the fate of Hood's boys and the Tigers.

Also, the 24th were ordered to lay down their knapsacks shortly before that fight, but never picked 'em back up, which must have made life fairly hellish until they reached Richmond again.
