Are we talking about rifles or canons? Or is this going in a weird direction?

Imo yes and no. You need a decent barrel length to get good range and pattern to begin with, but the choke selection is much more important when it comes to shot pattern and how long it stays tight before spreading out.
Imo a 30-32 inch barrel is the best.

Why did I thought of something a bit perverse when I clicked to this place? :p
Anyway I think short shotgun barrels are cool, however I have no experience.

It would seem that the guy in the article's photo would disagree with you. :)

Their definitely cool and fun to shoot but they aren't very useful imo.
Personally I don't like short barreled shotguns that much though I do like a .410 snake charmer.

Well as long it's loaded with a 12 gauge buckshot I'm fine... ...12 gauge buckshot, because it's good for defending...5076
