As the title suggests this thread is for us to discuss the many weapons used during the Civil War.

What are some of your favourites and why?

What are the weirdest?

What was the most deadly?

Which one sucks in design and why?

Lets discuss!!!

I love the 1851 Colt Navy. Perfect lines! :)

We have one right between Fancy's and my desk so it's in our field of vision pretty much all of the time while we're at the office.

One of the more odd looking is the Savage 1861 Navy revolver. Appearently a great piece to use, but horrid to look at. :P

The Sharps M1859, Whitworth and M1841 Mississippi rifles are very appealing to me also.

An odd one would be the Beaumont-Adams double-action revolvers.

Did we just become best friends??

I absolutely adore that gun.

I also like the 1851(?) Remington and Le Matt revolvers. (I want the Le Matt for self defense because why not)

Oh I know, I wasn't saying that you had forgotten it literally, it was more so a figure of speech. :)

The Henry is cool since it became the Winchester, the rifle that became one of symbols of Americana.

My favourite is the Smith Carbine, It looks awesome, And it's fast to load and is break action, And I love break action guns.
5096

But I am also a fan of the p53 Enfield and Whitworth Rifle because England....
5097 5098

Favourite melee weapons are Bowie Knife, 1840 NCO Sword and the US Navy's Model M1860 Cutlass.
5099 5100 5101

Deadliest of the War was probably the Napoleon 12 Pounder Cannon because they seem to have been the most used cannons. And probably Enfields and Springfield of different types because they were the most widely used so they would have caused the most casualties.
5102

Favourite Pistol is the Kerr Patent Revolver. And the Remington Revolver.
5103 5104

And the 1832 Artillery sword is kind of cool looking too, That along with the Kerr Patent Revolver would also go as some of the weirdest looking ones.

Technically it started with the Volcanic :p

But yeah I agree. Cool looking weapons. Had the pleassure of shooting a Henry rifle on the range with George last year. Great experience!

Great choices!

hmm though not used very often i'll go with the whitworth breech-loading cannon for artillery. it was used mainly by csa and because it had to be imported from britain not many were used but a very decent gun nevertheless.
then for infantry rifles i would go with the fayetteville rifle. it was agreed by many than it was far superior even to guns used by the Union during the war like the harper's ferry or the springfield(i guess the referance was about the 1861 springfield). but like so many good pieces of Weapons designed in the south during the war it wasnt put in mass-production due to the lack of the necessery infrastructure and resources needed to build the gun(96% of the guns used by the south were actually NOT made in the south during the war).
for sharpshooters and so on i would go with the whitworth rifle and even better a scoped whitworth.
i am not very familiar with repeating rifles but i want to mention the burnside carbine which was the carbine that was the 3rd in Number of guns used during the war(after the smith and spencer). what is a tragic irony is that the creator of a very effective gun was actually one of the worst generals in the American Civil war if not the worst(you know Ambrose Burnside).
This is a Weapons thread for the American Civil war so i guess we should also include vessels as well(not a weapon but you get the point). Here i'll go with the very First submarine ever used in combat WITH SUCCESS. THE CSS HUNLEY. yeah okay it most probably got sunk due to the torpedo explosion it used to sink the USS Housatonic though the reaons for its sinking are still being debated. Anyway everyone start thanking CSA right now for your submarines(just kidding the hunley got sunk after all).
