I was thinking a permanent character online. You can choose who he fights for, What he looks like, maybe a little biography or background story. Maybe you can even track in game stats. I hate to say it, but maybe a little like the call duty stats. Just an idea, goes along with the whole realism idea in my opinion.

We have been talking about some of those ideas. But we're still considering all the drawbacks, possibilities, advantages and alternatives to and of such a system.

Yeah, there are quite a few negatives. Anyways, are y'all going to be implementing in game regiments? I was looking forward to it in north and south, as were many people.

One of our higher priorities is to make the game as awesome as possible for reenactors and people like them. This means implementing all the necessary tools for them, to do their reenactment :)

I support this, the problem with Mount & Blade: Warband - Napoleonic Wars is that there is not enough customization, even if you have to keep the units accurate, allow servers to decide if they want custom content such as unlocks and so on and those who want realism and balance can just play as a selection of units. Maybe a modder can do this if they allow for modding, as the developers are aiming for realism.

it might sound repetative but i agree the more customisation the better. and stat imrpovement. i know its often reguarded to as "CoD-fagginess" or "stuff for 12 year olds" but i disagree. if everyone is totally honest, they would surely like the fact you can choose a great variety of custom apearence and improve your ingame stats. maybe also give actual "reg training" some head bonuses... i.E if you are playing with your regiment and often train together, maybe increace accuracy a bit, morale, be less affected by wounds and so on... so the longer you train and fight with your regiment, the better the regimental stats are. and also improving the weapons like in i.E. Red Orchestra. its only tweaked a bit when you maxed the gun, but enough to want to level it up.

What about a reputation system in-game? Where you can vote +1 reputation point for a good player.
Also: the reputation can be increased by making big actions, like shoot an enemy from far away or kill more than twenty in one round without die...

I think the idea of traits and reputations would be awesome. A permanent Character would also hopefully stop reg hoping etc
I like the reputations idea, and probably having an achievement awards when you done something or when your reputation reaches a certain amount. Might also just display it on your own characters page so that other players may see.

I agree with Brock. Player customisation would be a good and realistic thing to add, maybe something comparable with Mount & Blade, where you can also customise your online character. Maybe more details and more things to choose
from compared with MB . Stats and background story also sound very nice. Now I'm thinking about it, a few ideas pop into my mind. Maybe an option where you can find stats about other players, or stats you can look into while in a server (< more summarised version than stats/leaderbords on head menu ? ). Example. I'm ingame and another player joins the server. When I hold my mouse on his name, a small profile/list with stats will pop up, along with some personal information, maybe something like this :
Joseph Smith
born 14 Dec 1840, Mobile, Alabama
Married
Nation : Confederate States Of American/CSA
kills : 20
deaths : 3
K/D : 6,66
Biography :
Joseph was born in Mobile, AL 14 Dec 1840. Joseph
joined the Alabama Volunteer Corp, along with his 3 brothers
June 1861. Joseph is married with Louise Decraux and has 4
children.
^ this is just raw draft but hopefully this gives an idea what I mean to say. Maybe you can see more info on the leaderbords, or a special page in the head menu's where you can look through player profiles.
Another idea is that you can make two customisable characters before you join a server, one when you join the Confederate forces and one when you join the Federal forces. Maybe you
want to sport a nice beard or moustache when you are marching barefoot in a butternut jacket against Lincoln's forces or maybe you want a clean shaved faced while marching under the federal flag. I hope you guys get my idea and if you have any feedback or questions, feel free to ask.
*EDIT*
I just read the whole thread but I partly disagree with some things said here. I'm against weapon unlocks or achievements because It affects the realism, which the developers want the game to be. A reputation like stat on your profile on the other hand is a very good idea and I even think it will keep away trolls from regiments in certain cases.

I think my idea about a player stat/profile which is viewable by other players is somewhat the same idea that Ioun has.

Reputation would be awesome, if a regiment was search for skilled members, they would know who to pick. Also, I agree with what Smissen has said, it would keep dem trolls away.

Reputation sounds really (really) good but in my opinion having a K/D system is more than stupid since many players play casualy most of the times and also many people may help in the battle without actually killing too many enemies. For example capturing/finding a good position, blowing something up etc. Artillery is a good example of that... having a cannon pointed at a direction means that the enemy will avoid this area forcing them to take a different route which most likely be to their disadvantage.... if there was a K/D system these artillerists would get no "points".
Just my thoughts.

It would be cool if you could have a character on each side, and i think nothing should be locked, customization, guns, everything should be at the players disposal. Like north and south for mount and blade Napoleonic wars. but maybe a few restrictions so you don't have 100 colonel's. and if you could have a regiment/clan and friend system so a big group of people can play on one match together and opposing forces as a line. but i don't know how the game will turn out but I am totally going to get it. FOR THE CONFEDERACY!

If you mean have everything at your disposal as having nothing that is paid for with real money, I don't really think that's on the agenda. In the way of guns, I think the developers should try and shoot for historical guns for each unit, which I'm sure they are planning on doing. As far as the ranks go, it will probably work like the system for Red Orchestra does, where there is a limit for each rank besides the lower ones of course.
Some of these ideas are really cool, having traits added to your character due to the way he acts in battle is one. But I can also foresee this causing problems and inconsistency between players. Some players might get a speed buff from their traits, which would completely mess up formations. I do however think that all weaponry should be allowed from the start of the game like in NaS. I don't agree that a K/d score should be kept as it is just ammunition that allows immature players to use it in their arguments about who is the better player.
I personally value Realism the most, but if there were some form of trait system maybe when a regiment leader creates a regiment, he chooses some traits that will reflect how he wants his regiment to be. Eg. "Steady under fire" would make suppression effect your men less. or "Hard marchers" would make you men's stamina last longer. There would be say 4 traits he could select, with say 20 to choose from. This does however effect many other things and create unbalance and a potential loss in realism, but it would be interesting to see other ideas.
The regiment training suggestion earlier is an interesting Idea, but I think would create too much unbalance. Someone might make a regiment at release and train 3 times a week and a year later when someone else decides they want to have a go at making a regiment, all other regiments are unnaturally far better. Training is a personal thing, it should make you yourself a better player and should not give boosts to a player to make them better.

I believe that the devs will take the most realistic road possible. That means the weaponry should not all be available to any soldier. Now, I'm not suggesting you should have to unlock weapons, but I'm saying that the weaponry needs to correspond to the type of rank and soldier you are playing as at that moment. This means that random foot soldiers shouldn't be running around with revolvers, or repeater rifles unless of course that's what that unit was equipped with historically, as there were many northern regiments that used repeaters.
I personally think that there shouldn't really be any player progression, however, it was a fact that a soldier who had been fighting for three years was far cooler in combat than a soldier who had been fighting for one week. To implement this idea, the more hours someone's specific character has in combat, the more accurate they are, the faster they reload, and the less suppression affects their view. Now, I'm not saying these should be dramatic boosts in aim or calmness in battle, but should be very slight. So slight that they are just enough to be noticeable. If someone creates a new character, this progression will restart all over again.

I agree. When I said all weapons should be accessible I was implying that they should be accessible within their own historical boundaries as you stated.

Maybe instead of the cliched capture the flag game mode, you can have a "capture the president mode". Who doesn't want to sling Ole Abe over their back and run half way across the battle of Antietam. I'm coming for you Hinkel >: )
