Thought I should post in here, perhaps.
It's of special interest to this forum owing to the type of photography I work with; specifically the wet-plate process, ambrotypes and tintypes of 1850/1860.
Here are four tintypes from earlier in the month, made them for my Grandaddy's birthday. Oh, and yours truly at work.
If you're in the United Kingdom and interested, feel free to send a PM and I'll see what I can do for you.

Cheers Trusty.
It's on my agenda for next year when the warmer months roll in again. I'll be looking to travel the historical fairs and reenactments in period clothing and with period equipment! I'd like to reiterate that this is exactly the same process as it was one hundred and fifty years ago. Pretty much every image one may look at of the American Civil War (and civilian life either side of the conflict) will be produced originally either on tin or glass negative (for reprinting). I recently traveled to West Virgina to stay with a friend for a few weeks and had the opportunity to visit Antietam and Harper's Ferry (among others), it shouldn't have to be said but I think I'll be staying around these forums quite a lot from now on - utterly in love with anything and everything from the mid nineteenth century.

Oh, and come over to the UK next year and I'll happily oblige yourself (and your dev team!) with some tintypes to keep for yours and yours truly.

could you do the weird over saturated false colour they had?

Leifr
10-15-2015, 05:59 PM
Example?
Colour images (whether film, plate or printed) did not become available for the absolute vast majority of consumers until the late 1800s / early 1900s. However, the process of hand colouring images was certainly possible and very prevalent - especially among the public. Typically, a small amount of pigment was layered onto the surface of an image and then sealed with varnish to produce the 'colour' image. I'd like to see an example though of what you think you're suggesting.

I think I mean what you're saying but most of the example i'm thinking of are photos from teh '20s but these look like what I was thinking

I see now.

The first example is an ambrotype (glass plate) image of three Confederates whom were captured at Gettysburg. The original is certainly not coloured in any way, what you're seeing there is a digital manipulation. I have done a little bit of this myself but I am not a professional by any means. It is usually done in Photoshop and involves building up the layers to achieve a realistic palette of tones. Here is something I did two years back (but never finished):

http://tw.greywool.com/i/g73Ue.jpg

The second one could go either way, although without seeing the original source I am inclined to suggest that it is simply a very, very poorly done digital colouring.

Nice sketch Stephen. I like the spelling of your name btw. I'm digging the "ph" (My name is also Stephen with a "ph". I get excited when I see other Stephens :p)

I'm sorry I had to delete this sketch as I've found a mistake in it (moreover, it's happened to look quite primitive). A good drawing will require seriously hard work.
As for name Stephen, I think with 'ph' it's just more traditional. Steven and Stephen are the same names, but Steven is more Anglo-Saxon-oriented.

Just a rough sketch/trace. I'm trying out digital drawing so I just traced a photo to start out, plus I don't have a drawing tablet so I have to use a mouse so I had some trouble with that. I'm gonna keep at it and see how I improve, I just started drawing again after years of not drawing so my skills are pretty bad. Does a tablet help with digital drawing? I've never used one before so I'm a little nervous about how it works

Also, the soldiers having their packs on is slightly inaccurate, though it is very nice otherwise.

Morning.
I have attached two digital copies of a pair of halfplate ferrotypes. These were made last November for three friends, you can probably take an intelligent guess as to their preferred uniform choice. It's rather difficult to produce plates during the late-afternoon in the winter, the chemicals don't behave properly, usually requiring a bit of a push and some wizardry to function. In the summer I use quite a lot of sugar during development to act as a restrainer.

Reminds me, I must return that PM to Johnny_Reb_1865.

Wouldn't that just be fantastic? I was in the States back in 2015 for a few weeks but I'm afraid that I spent all of it in (West)Virginia. I bet there's a wet-plate photographer within a reasonable drive for you though Lance.

Copenhagen is manageable as a drive from the UK, I've done it one too many times for work now. If there's ever a moment where your American staff members (Tuffant?) make it over, perhaps that should be when I hop on over. There might be need for a little bit of a financial reparation, it'd be a lot of fuel spent in my old van. Alternatively, come by the UK some time and I'll happily spend a day in the studio for free - just set me up with a camera prop and some civvie clothing that I can deploy in game. ;)

Perfect, I have some resources for you to read over then. I'll endeavour to get it done this afternoon when I finish work.

A fine effort Luke! May I ask, what source are you using for acquiring the original positive images? Are you aware that the Library of Congress have digitised hundreds, if not thousands, of civil war photography at a ridiculous resolution?

Indeed i do , The LOC is one of the places i use most of the time finding images...Sadly the LOC don't always have the images i'm looking for and even if they do it don't mean it is of the best quality or of a good resolution. They own thousands of images and some need to be updated with the correct software and scanned again to be up to standards of today , Same goes with the private collections. Some people don' understand what 300+ DPI is and scan them however they wish and resulting with a crap quality image. Some images are plates itself and are printed out on post cards , ect. And that kills the quality itself but it is the only thing left and their's not much they can do about it sense the original plate is gone.

Point of interest on the Savage Station hospital. The man in the middle with the white shirt and straw hat is photographer Brady himself, all doctored up as a casualty.

Very nice! I thought the canteen in the middle was a soccer ball at first, but I was able to puzzle it out.

The one critique I have is that it looks a little too in focus for a civil war picture, but everything else looks great!

Best,

Many thanks, and you're very much right about the canteen resembling a football. However, I would advise that you visit the Library of Congress website and trawl through their digitised collection of ACW plates. You'll find that a great very many of them are perfectly sharp and certainly in focus. A photographer of the period would not last long in business were he inadequate of technique.
